Guide to Greeks Rush Week approaching With Rush Week fast ap proaching Feb. 2-9, The De cree and Mark Crum got to gether to produce the follow ing article on the Greeks at N.C. Wesleyan. By MARK CRUM What is Rush? It is a time for you to get to know the Greek system here at North Carolina Wesleycn College. Rush is the formal membership drive of fraternities and sororities. During the week of Rush, you will meet many new people and will learn about the Greek system here at Wesleyan. Rush is a mutual selection process. You will be selecting a group you want to join while the fraternities and soror ities will be selecting prospective members. Mutual interest by a fra ternity or sorority and your results in pledgeship. What is a fraternity? A fraternity is a group of men who hold similar ideals and objectives. Fraternities provide friendship, social activities, and service to the college and com munity. They provide opportunities for individual growth in leadership, social, and academic affairs. What is a sorority? A sorority is a group of women bonded together by sisterhood. Sororities are designed to help you gain the most from your college experience. Each sorority here at Wesleyan promotes the greatest potential of each member according to individual skills, talents, and personality. The Intcr-Fratemity Council coordinates and conducts all inter- fraternity activities of the five Greek organizations at Wesleyan. The IFC serves as a mediating body for the Greek system and coordinates all rushing and pledging procedures. Alpha Delta Chi, established in 1965 and chartered in 1967, was organize for the purpose of improving Wesleyan's social life and bettering the college community. Each year the Fraternity sponsors a Rock-A-Thon to raise funds for Nash/Rocky Mount Mental Health. The Fraternity offers social, athletic, and services to the school as needed. Nu Gamma Phi, the second social fraternity to be organized here at Wesleyan, was chartered in 1967.The Brotherhood seeks to promote fellow ship academically, as well as socially, both on campus and in the Rocky Mount community. Last year the fraternity helped the Red Cross Blood Drive and raised money for Easter Seals at the ECU Volleyball Marathon. Sigma Pi, formally Pi Kappa Omega, received its national charter on April 5, 1986. The fraternity is a member of Sigma Pi International has grown to its present capacity of 135 chapters across the United States and Canada. The fraternity promotes brotherhood to enhance truth and justice and develop character in the service of the college and com munity. Pi Epsilon, Wesleyan's first sorority, was founded in 1968. Its membership consists of females who have a "C" average or better and who are full-time students. Although it is a social organization, one of its prime purposes is service. Next year Pi Epsilon will be celebrating its 20th anniversary, and is planning an alumni weekend during spring flins. Sigma Phi Delta, Wesleyan's second sorority, has been active in all phases of college life since it was established in 1971 as a social sorority. Annual events include a party for alumni, members and guests at homecoming, an Open House for the Wesleyan Women, and Rush Week for interested female students during spring term. In addition, the sorority stresses the importance of academic achievement and service to the college. Have you noticed some new faces on the men's and women's basketball sidelines this season? Both Jim Bennington and B. J. Jones are new to the North Carolina Wesleyan coaching staff. Bennington joins men's head basketball coach Bill Chambers and Jones accompanies the women's head coach Laura Ferrell. Both assistant jobs are paid positions because the basketball budgets were designed to allow for assistant coaches. The job of all assistants at Wesleyan is strictly part-time, with responsibilities of coaching during practices and games. Mike Fox, Athletic Director and head base ball coach said, "We all need assistant coaches, because a lot of institutions are using assistant coaches." Fox admits, that, "It is hard to find someone who knows the game and has the time ." The men's head coach. Bill Chambers, says he came across Bennington accidently when his head coaching job came up. "I needed a place to sleep the fkst night at Wesleyan and Jim offered me a place. We talked and he really knew the game." Chambers says coaching with an assistant benefits the team all around. "He is doing an excellent job, he has the rcspect of the players and he has an excellent basketball mind. Jim Bennington is a Physical Educational graduate of ECU. He played in high school and in the Air Force, then coached as an assistant at Roanoke High School. Bennington is happy working for Chambers at Wesleyan. "I enjoyed talking to Coach Chambers and he was very knowledgeable," Bennington said. He added that he is interested in getting his foot in the door of coaching and with chambers he thinks he will get his experience he needs for the future. B. J. Jones is assisting the women's basketball coach, Laura Ferrell. Ferrell says Jones ap proached her at the end of last season about wanting to help out. She said that Jones came out to a couple of practices and the team really liked him. Ferrell offered Jones the job when the budget allowed for an assistant. Ferrell stressed the fact that, "He is a very, good teacher." Ferrell also com ments about Jones' enthusiasm: "He comes across to the players well and really gets them excited about playing basketball." Ferrell adds that Jones is good working with women and he really helps her way of coaching. Ferrell has even named her offense after Jones. B. J. Jones gets his experience from working in recreation in the military for eight years. Jones coached women's basketball in the military, but not the caliber of Wesleyan ball. "This is the most talented team I've ever coached," says Jones. "We have speed, rebounding, and shooting ability." Jones thinks that he and Ferrell compliment each other well." I love working with coach Ferrell because she is very open. She never shows that she doesn't have room for improvement."
