JANUARY 29,1987 — THE DECREE — PAGE 3 Assistant coach enjoying season By DON RHODES Lamont McNair is a teacher of exceptional children at Rocky Mount Senior High School. He is also the assistant basketball coach of North Carolina Wesleyan men’s basketball team. McNair, who last year was an assistant coach at Edwards Junior High in Rocky Mount, was informed of a vacant assistant coach position by a friend earlier this year. At first, he admits, he wasn’t sure about tak ing the job, but upon careful consid ering of the idea, he decided, “Why not move up?” Now that McNair has been at Wesleyan for a couple of months, he feels good about the move. He be lieves that the players have im proved, and that he has helped them with some of the fundamentals of the game. His biggest success, however, has been in instilling good values, like teamwork, into the players. He wants teammates “to go to each other with eir problems, and help each other ■ith their studies.” If the players have “respect for ach other, then they will leam to get long in life,” which is most impor- ant, McNair said. McNair still plays basketball for merican youth how ignorance f geography American students don’t know cry much about geography, studies eleased during recent weeks show. Separate surveys of students’ eography knowledge at the Univer ity of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Cali- omia State and Mankato State uni- ersities found some collegians were nable to find the Soviet Union on a ap, thought Nicaragua was an sian island, or didn’t know the .S.’s leading trade partner was. Smdents who took a 21-question, ultiple-choice geography quiz at al State Fullerton, for example, veraged just 12 correct answers. At the University of Wisconsin- shkosh, only 22 percent of students ecently surveyed could find the oviet Union on a world map. In alias, another survey revealed that ne quarter of the high school seniors ested knew that Mexico is the nited States’ southern neighbor. “The tests are depressingly accu- ate,” said Patt Morrison, a Univer ity of Southern California joumal- sm teacher and Los Angeles Times eporter. “When students place the ering Straits off the coast of Maine d think Nicaragua is an island off e coast of India, something is defi- 'tely wrong.” Jounigan Food Store. His biggest thrill as a player came a few years ago when his team won the trophy, the only team from the Rocky Mount area in the last 15 years to do so. Although he doesn’t like to pre dict, McNair said that he feels good about the season and that the team “will be in the top three or four in the conference, and maybe the top two or three.” Three loan programs offer aid to residents Three educational loan programs for North Carolina residents attend ing colleges in or out of state and for nonresidents attending colleges in North Carolina are still available through C&llege Foundation, Inc. in Raleigh — for the entire 1987-88 school year or for specific terms, quarters, or semesters.
