JANUARY 29,1993 — THE DECREE — PAGE 7 Cheerleaders complain of harassment By CECILIA CASEY Every Sunday night from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., the North Caro lina Wesleyan College cheer leaders have a practice session in the Everett Gymnasium. They have had the gym re served for them on Sundays since the start of last semester and will continue to meet there through out this semester, and, as a legiti mate athletic team, they should not have to worry about being harassed, bugged, or rushed out of the gym by other people there just to play basketball or fool around. However, many students on Wesleyan’s campus are doing just that, showing up on Sunday night and trying to rush the cheerlead ers out of the gym. The cheerleaders have noted that the number of people who show up wanting to use the gym has stayed about the same, but the degree to which they try to get in is increasing. Several weeks ago, while the cheerleaders were practicing, a couple of male stu dents had to be asked to leave more than once, and finally when they returned the last time, secu rity was called, according to members of the squad. Then on Sunday, Jan. 17, about 10 students showed up and at first left after being asked, then re turned again. When they arrived back at the gym they found that the doors had been locked, so in stead of leaving, they pounded on the doors from about 8:30 p.m. until 9:15 p.m. Lynda Calhoun, who is coach ing the cheerleaders, spoke with Mike Fox who in turn spoke with the coaches about the problem. For the moment the situation is a bit better. Whether people will continue to stay out of the gym on Sunday nights remains to be seen. One problem may be that people do not see the cheerlead ers as a “real” sports team, which they are. Another problem might be that some people do not feel the cheerleaders have a valid right to the gym at that time, which they do. Perhaps people do not understand that the cheerleaders need the whole gym, not just part of it, so that they can have the silence they need to concentrate and the height they need to per form their jumps and construct their stunts. Whatever the cause, the cheer leaders have asked that the mem bers of the Wesleyan community give them the respect they de serve as well as the time and fa cilities they need to become a bet ter athletic team. Wesleyan has shot at title behind talents of nucleus Both basketball teams split in opening conference play The North Carolina Wesleyan men’s basketball team earlier this month opened Dixie conference play at home against Greensboro College. The Bishops started slow and never really found a groove on their way to a 71-62 loss. Shawn Mobley led the team on the night with 22 points and 10 rebounds. “Our loss to Greensboro was very disappointing,” said head coach Bill Chambers. “We came out flat and didn’t do anything well all night.” The team then traveled to con ference foe Averett College on Saturday and came away with a 83-55 win. Mobley and senior James Condery shared the scor ing honors with 12 points each. Mobley hit the boards hard again as he came up with six on the night. The win pushed the team to 1-1 in the conference and 6-6 overall. “I was glad to see the team bounce back at Averett,” said coach Chambers. “We played ex cellent defense and kept them off the boards.” The North Carolina Wesleyan women’s basketball team started conference play earlier this month by hosting Greensboro College. ITie Lady Bishops played well throughout the game, but came up short in the last minute of play for a 66-61 loss. Junior Lisa Tyson led the team in scoring with 21 points. “We played our most consis- tent'gameof tiieyear,” said head- coach John Brackett. “But we didn’t hit the shots we needed to at the end of the game. It was a tough loss, especially when it was our conference opener.” The women then traveled to Averett College on a Saturday and won their first conference game of the year, 54-44. Tyson played impressively again, scoring 17 points and collecting 12 rebounds on the night. “We basically won a very ugly game,” said coach Brackett. “We played well defensively, but struggled in the second half on the offensive end. Averett is a much improved team and gave us all we could handle.” By BRAD BARNES In order for the Battling Bish ops to bring the Dixie Confer ence championship home to Everett Gymnasium and meet President Les Gamer in the Rose Gardner (well, maybe the park ing lot would be more realistic), they must set a few goals for themselves. First, they must forget about the players they lost over the break. Second, they must play with a little bit of an attitude. Who cares what everyone else is say ing, “You gotta believe, baby!” Third, they must support, that terrific nucleus they have in James Condery, Robert Bland; and Shawn Mobley. Talk about style, James Condery has it I watched him play at Southwest High School in North Carolina. He was good then; he is even better now. James, Mr. Condery to you, brings a lot of class to the floor. He can outlet Sail into a successful future. Chart your course at.. ClkMEII DM February 3 Student Activities Center 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Bishop Prayer As ^ Bishops'fans lay down to sleep, how they pray the men's basketball team wins thbi week. And if a loss should come their way^ it will not be because Robert Bland, James Can* dery, and Shawn Mobley didn't come to play. Amen. and push the ball on any team — and he loves to dunk in your face. Shawn Mobley can really be nasty if you upset him. He is av eraging almost 15 points a game while taking six rebounds a con test. Forward Robert Bland is the shy one. This guy leads the team in steals, blocked shots, and re bounds. Just name the category, and he will be in the stats. Take all of this, add some good role players like 6-4 forward Jeremiah Matthews along with sound bench play, and these guys can challenge for the Dixie crown. This is crunch time for the Blue and Gold. They have a record of 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Who is the team to beat in the conference? De fending Dixie champions Chris topher Newport College. Some have already written off the Bishops as far as beating these guys, but remember, just because it smells does not mean it stinks — and to walk to Dixie, you have to come through Bishops’ Row.
