Sword fights, love, lust, honor,
betrayal, and above all, questions
about truth and justice pull the
audience into the bamboo world
outside the gates of Rashomon.
As the Coltrane Theatre pre
pares to present Rashomon, a
Japanese play which is based on
the stories by Ryunosuke Aku-
tagawa and written by Say and
Michael Kanin, the consensus is
that this will prove to be one of
the most stimulating, heart-stop-
ping, and uniquely exotic plays
that has been produced by the
Wesleyan Players.
Rashomon is the name of a
gate near where the drama un
folds. A man has been found mur
dered and a bandit has been ar
rested for the murder. Three dif
ferent re-teUings of the murder
highlight the fact tiiat the play is
not just a mystery but a story of
truth versus a person’s percep
tion of what they think is “the
truth.” There is also another story
outside that of the persons directly
involved, though it is not obvious
until the “hook” at the end.
The stage and music give the
play a surrealistic quality, which
helps to explore the images we
create when we think about what
is true and real. Also the cast is a
mixture of well-seasoned veter
ans and fresh new actors. Allen
Felton plays the Samurai warrior
who is murdered; Todd Waters
plays the bandit accused of the
miu-der; and Julie Salkeld plays
the wife of the warrior.
Debbie Rithman, John Heame,
Shannon Johnson, Sam Bell, and
Carol Gay make up the rest of the
cast. Junior theater major Joan
Dobson stage manages this com
plex and exciting show, which is
directed by Vaughn Schutz.
The play will run next
Wednesday through Saturday and
again Feb. 25-27. The doors wUl
be opened at 7:30 p.m. and tick
ets will be $3 for students, staff,
and faculty; $5 for the general
public.
Due to the sword fighting, no
one will be allowed to sit in the
front row of the theater, so come
early to get a good seat.
Rashomon is a great show you
won’t want to miss!
