Tim Valentine of Nashville has joined nearly 250 members of the U.S. House in introducing a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitu tion. Valentine has co-sponsored similar legislation in every ses sion of Congress since his elec tion to the U.S. House in 1983. “I am not m favor of haphaz ardly amending the legal founda tion of the United States, which is the Constitution,” he said in-^^ > statement to his colleagues. "The urgent need to getour fisc^ house in order, however, is so acute I do not believe we have the luxury of putting off the day of reckon ing any longer.” The sixth-term Democrat from the Second District said, “I be lieve that a balanced budget amendment is the first step to ward reducing the national debt, but I realize this amendment will not solve all of our economic problems. “I am not saying that a bal anced budget amendment will make our choices to cut spending or raise revenue any easier,” he said. “What it will do is force us to make those difficult choices.” Noting that Congress has added $3 trillion to the national debt over the past 10 years, Val entine said, “We finally have a President who says he is commit ted to serious deficit reduction. Let us become full partners with him in that effort.
