MARCH 26,1993 — THE DECREE — PAGE 7 Improved Lady Bishops easily exceed expectations By BRAD BARNES Hey, back in December I wrote a pre-season story on the Lady Bishops basketball titled “Lady Bishops determined to improve.” The story talked about the dif ficulties facing the Lady Bishops from the year before. It ^o talked about some of the keys needed to miike this past season a good one. It suggested that the Lady Bish ops would not only be a different team this year but a good one, too. After that story came out, people were telling me how im pressed they were with what I wrote and how good it was. Thanks, but they also told me how crazy I was to have believed that the girls would be a better team this year. Well, who is crazy now? The Lady Bishops have not only im proved on that 6-16 record from last year, going 11-14, but also made it through the first round of the Dude Confraence Champion ship with a home win over Femim College on Feb, 23. What has been the key fw the return of Bishop pride? Team work. That’s right, everyone was pulling together and, like the folks from that shoe company like to say, “just doing it” They were just a bunch of athletes coming together and shooting some hoops. Bishop style. The December pre-season story also talked about how se nior guard Jennifer Short had to step up and lead this team. And that’s exactly what she did. her name was not the first name you saw in the scoring stats at the end of every game, but she was in the game when it counted. She was not only a headsy player, but she was smart one, too. The pre-season story also men tioned that junior forward Lisa Tyson was perhaps the best of fensive player in the league. I hate to admit it, but I was wrong. She was definitely the best. I was sitting behind the bench of an opposing team one game and overheard one of the parents of a giri on the opposing team say, “You know, we could win this game if we broke Tyson’s legs.” Watching her reminds me of my favorite basketball player, Larry Bird — never fast but al ways on time and fim to watch. The only difference — Tysra is ^ betterljci^rig;!; I /i ■; I i *! *;!!; STlie Decree ports Christie Donofrio finished her season in the zone! She lead the team in three-point field goals. One time in practice, a player challenged her to knock down a three-pointer with her eyes closed. I don’t need to tell you what h?^- pened, but if you h^pen to see L.B. Watson, just smile and say, “Hey, L.B., we all make mistakes sometimes.” Donofrio, along with Tyson, clearly played the most consistent ball tte year. First year s(q>homore forward Chris Webb played good on both sides of the ball this year. She lead her Bishop team in steals (45 at last count) and was third in scoring. Webb’s wizardry on the floor was definitely one of the reasons for the Bishops’ turn around season. Lyim Harris plays the game like the homeys you see in the paric, the ones that don’t call the fouls and always have the skinned-up knees—the ones who have the nicknames you never heard of, like Cool-Burt, Hair- Cut, and my favorites, Dookey and H^drock. In that pre-season story I told you to have your in surance policy in hand when you played her. Well, there were a lot of premiums collected this month. She played hard on the glass and just plain harassed opposing play ers. Do not forget the role players. Guard Dracena Cherry played great by providing some quality minutes off the bench, along with forward L.B. Watson. Their woman/child center Kathleen Hakenson came through with some big games this season and has beai getting better and more CMifident with every game. On a team loaded with tremen dously talented but sometimes in^ consistent ball players, the Lady Bishops showcased some of the best wOTien’s basketball players I have seen in a long time. This is not a misprint. Hie Bishops fin ished their season widi confid^ce and style. , Playing in a confo^ence that is becoming di, so exciting, head coach John Brackett has a team coming back next season that makes your tongue tingle, they could take the Dixie Conference if they wanted it. This team, with the help of a strong bench and the exparienced play of the big three — Lisa Tyson, Chris Webb, and Chris tina Donofiio — will next year definitely be playing that in-your- face kind of basketball that could turn them into a dominant power in the conference.
