PAGE 4 — THE DECREE — SEPTEMBER 17,1993 Bishops power past Bulldogs, 5-1 By PATRICK BRANNAN Following coach Spencer Smith’s strategy to pressure the defenders, Wesleyan’s men’s soccer team defeated Barton College on Sept. 8 in a strong po-formance, 5-1. Lowery has starred in Apol lo’s Comedy Hours, Caroline’s Comedy Hour, Def Comedy Jam, and Spotlight Cafe. Lowery uses topics such as drinking during college years, sex, rela tionships between men and women, and crime. “Drinking in college is a popular subject It is one that everyone can relate to some way or another,” he said. “The tour I am on now is called ‘What’s Wrong With This World?’ In it, I have been talk ing about subjects such as how children’s behavior has changed, crime problems, and others that are affecting us today,” Lowery said. “I really enjoy performing in front of audiences,” he said. ‘To hear people’s laughter is like a drug — it’s very addictive.” “He was one of the better comedians that Wesleyan has ever had. His act included those litfle peculiarities in human na ture that all of us can identify sisted by sophomore Eric Rams. The Bishops continued to pres sure the Barton Bulldogs for most of the game. The early score and constant pressure on Barton’s backs allowed Wes leyan to come away with the victory. Smith knew the Bulldogs would look for their forwards provement,” agreed senior co captain Marie Lenane. The girls played last Saturday in the Methodist Tournament, traveled to Averett College on Tuesday, and will host Salem and Barton today at 5:30 p.m. The team consists of 10 players, including five returning players, three freshmen, and two others members. Returning are Glynis Cureton, Diana Friedrich, Marie Lenane, Jennifer Parrish, and L.B. Watson. The three freshmen are Debbie Cameron, Kasey Griffin, and Jade with and laugh at,” said sopho more Anneliese Hatcher. One of the highlights of the show was when Lowery invited members of the audience to go on stage and help out with a skiL Sue McKonnack, director of the Campus Activities Board, was pleased with the turnout. ‘This show was excellent for an opening night of entertainers. I was worried that people wouldn’t show because they had other things to do. I was pleased when we almost had a full crowd,” she said. “We have a lot of good shows lined up for this year,” McKormack added. Intramural update Team tennis registration: SepL 17-24. Louis Bottino and Jamie Neal and midfielder Shannon Shuskey to be the catalyst for Barton’s attack. “Wesleyan must contain these three,” Smith said. Wes leyan did just that as the lone Bulldog goal came from Jaksa Djordjevic 14 minutes into the first half. Marinelli. They are joined by Julie Salkeld and Christy Slaw. One of the freshmen expected to have a solid impact on the team is Kasey Griffin. “One characteristic which makes the team different from last year is that we have a strong setter, that being Kasey,” said Long. “Kasey has the raw ability and the potential to help this team during the course of the season.” Senior co-captain L.B. Wat son said, “We have some great- looking freshmen that should have a great impact on our season.” Coach Long is optimistic about the team and the upcom ing season, but knows the chal lenge ahead will not be easy. “Our strengths are that we have the experience and the ladies seem to have the drive and determination to turn things around this season,” he said. “But in order to start this season off on a winning note, we must become more efficient in our serving and we have to have better communication on the court.” Lenane agrees with Long that the team has the drive to win. ‘This is a new team from last year’s and with this new team comes a new outlook,” she said. Wesleyan’s pressure led to three goals to close out the first half and take a 4-1 lead into the intermission. Sophomore Erik Ursiak stole the ball and drib bled in for .an unassisted goal just over 24 minutes into the first half. Ursiak found the net again three minutes later off a pass from freshman Carlos Velez. Then, freshman Joey “With the strong foundation and the fresh faces, every position is taken care of this year and that definitely gives the team more continuity.” Watson agreed, “All of the positions ^e filled and each player knows her role in that po sition. With that, the team will continue to improve as the sea son progresses.” Lenane knows what needs to be done, and she states it simply. “We need to get to the level of play that we are capable of play ing,” she said. “Our goal is to end up with more wins than losses.” Long believes that with the new players, ihe experience, and his new coaching style and tech niques, the team is on its way up. “I’ve learned a lot over the summer and we plan to incorpo rate some new plays in our game plan,” he said. “Our number one goal is to get over the hump. We had some close games last year, but we need to get that first con ference win under our belt.” The team and Long temper their optimism with realism. “We just want to win more than we did last year,” Long said. “If we accomplish that, then I’ll feel that we’ve had a successful season.” Bowman scored off an assist to freshman Mike Vitale 28 min utes into the half. The second half saw the ten sion and aggressiveness build as two Wesleyan players were given yellow cards. The teams settled down and played a strong defensive half until freshman Adam McCall scored off an assist from freshman Mike Tiedeman at the 87-minute mark of the game. After the game Smith said he was pleased with the team’s per formance. He was also pleased with the depth that his bench provided. The ability to get the non-starters to contribute allows Wesleyan to add fresh legs late in the fu-st half and the game. With the Bishops having a young team, just five upper classmen on the roster, it is im portant for them to continue to build and come together as a team. Smith also knows his team must stay healthy to stay com petitive in the conference. “Since I’ve been here this is the strongest the conference has been,” he noted. Wesleyan plays a total of 11 homes games, including games against conference rivals Meth- o^t on OcL 67 and Greensboro on Oct. 30. The Bishops also travel to play Duke on Oct. 27. So the Wesleyan soccer field will play host to a lot of exciting matches.^ 4 Money F Starring Damon Wayans, Stacey Dash "S and Joe Santos v* 1 Patriot Games E Stoning V" Harrison Ford Anne Archer Patrick Berlin '^^heptember25 9:30pm^r ■W Flatliners Starring Kiefer Sutherland H* ■A Julia Roberts Kevin Bacon ^ 9^30pm^F^ j Unlawful ^ ■J Entry F Starring Kurt Russell, Madeleine Stowe^F October 23 9:30pm September & October SATURDAY NIGHT CINEMA Each Saturday Night In Doc's The Student Government ’ Association Needs YOU!
