The score was tied at 0-0 at k end of regulation as neither learn could find the net. Fourteenth-ranked Wesleyan luishot Macalester 5-4 in regula- |ion and had the first shot on goal n overtime. Macalester’s Holly Harris [headed in a comer kick at 1 ;02:30 n an assist by Kristine Lamm. Her goal was just the ninth goal given up by the Lady Bishops all year. The quarter-final lojjs ended the Bishops’ season at 17-2-4 and improved Macalester to 19-2. Macalester will now advance to the NCAA semi-finals against Williams (Mass.). This loss was one of the few disappointments suffered by the Bishops’ squad in the 1999 cam paign. The team obtained the NCAA berth after finishing the season with a 14-1 -4 record and the Dixie Conference Championship — the fourth year in a row they won the conference title —by defeating previously unbeaten Christopher Newport. 2-1, on Tuesday, Nov. 2. “CNN came out fired up and really dictated the pace of play during the first half,” said first- year coach Kelly Walters. “We knew that we had to find our com posure and really put together in the second half to preserve our unbeaten conference record.” The Bishops made the NCAA’s elite eight by winning a first round game against Savan nah College of Art and Design in Rocky Mount on Wednesday, Nov 3. Although they got off to a slow start as they went down 1-0, they still managed to keep their confi dence strong. Senior Jamie Funk assisted Senior Alexa Kapetanakis in the defeat in the fifth minute. NCWC played a difficult game that ended in a 3-2 overtime win after 95 minutes of play. This advanced the Bishops to the Southeast Regional in Lynchburg, Va., against Lynchburg College on Saturday. Nov 6. Freshman Kristi McGuire scored the only goal of the game on an assist from Senior Betsy Jones. McGuire placed a shot in to the top shelf of ihe net in the 24th minute, and that was all the Bishops really needed. The Bishops earned the 1-0 victory behind the outstanding performance of Senior goalkeeper (Continued on Back Page) Campus religious life healthy ■IUDYSHOWALTER IS NEW COORDINATOR OF RELIGIOUS LIFE By MONIQUE GILL Staff Writer Religious life here on campus is known to many through the different activities. These include worship and praise opportunities such as Chapel, the new Agape Praise Team, the Gospel Choir, and the Masses organized by Catholic Students. Bible and other study opportunities and fellow ship are provided by Campus Life and the FCA. Some students are actively tak ing a part this year, particularly Davon Davis, president of Gos pel Choir that has a bible study group in conjunction with the choir, named Grace and Peace Ministries. This bible study will be more of a teaching than preach ing and will minister to the Wesleyan community. Also the New Agape Praise Team, headed by Theresa Brad ley, was formed to prepare audi ences into the ministry of song through praise and worship in the Chapel services and community. Mrs. Judee Showalter is Wesleyan’s new coordinator for student religious life. This posi tion is basically new and so plans are still being worked out. Showalter’s undergraduate de gree was in Religious Studies at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va., were she was ac tive in the campus religious life. She also received a M.A. in Christian Education from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va.. in 1986. Hopes for an increase in Chapel attendance, more students active in religious organizations, another study or prayer group formed, and stronger bonds to the United Methodist Church and to local community churches are some concrete goals that Mrs. Showalter wishes to see come to pass. Faith Emphasis Month will try to bring opportunities such as a Coffee House that was held Nov.. (Continued on Back Page)
