Season frustrating for baseball team

The 2002 N.C. Wesleyan
Baseball team is experiencing a
frustrating season. Starting the
season off at 4-0 with wins over
nationally ranked teams, the
Bishops now find themselves at
12-19, 4-8 in the Dixie Con
ference. This places the Bishops
in seventh place, ahead of only
Shenandoah.

Meyers, Fla., to participate in the

The Season maybe coming to
a close, but the Softball Team
seems to be just getting started.
At the East Coast FastPitch
Classic (Mar. 22-24) the Lady
Bishops dropped their game
against Emory 4-6, before
defeating Keuka 5-4. After being
blanked by Roanoke 0-7, the
Bishops ended the tourney with
twin losses to Averett 4-12 and
Mary Washington 2-6.

defeated the Monarchs 3-0 for
their first shutout victory of the

The Battling Bishops continue
to make their way to the end of
the Tennis Season with a good
chance of making a big finish.
The Women’s Team is
currently 1-6 overall and 0-5 in
the conference. On March 28, the
Ladv BishoDS plaved conference
Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic
over Spring Break and returned
with a 3-4 record. The Bishops
defeated Fisher, Salve Regina and
Messiah, 23-0, 7-1, 15-4.
Wesleyan began conference
play when they returned facing
Methodist College and Shenan

conference win. The Bishops
suffered twin losses to the
Monarchs, 3-7, 2-5, and split
games with the Hornets, 2-6, 11-
4 to go 1-3 in the Dixie.

On Mar. 28, the Lady Bishops
had their first sweep of the season
against Randolph-Macon 9-1 and
6-0. In game one, pitcher Amy
Dodson (Jr.) pitched a three-hitter
and went 3-3 from the plate with
one homerun and a double. In
game two, pitcher Heather Petrillo
(Fr.) picked up the win with seven
strikeouts, while Dodson had a
double, Marquita Petrillo had a
triple and Parker had a double and
two RBI’s. The next day, the
Bishops faced Averett in the hopes
of evening out their conference
record. The Bishops hammered
rival Ferrum and lost 2-7.
Shannon St. George (Sr.) and
Danielle Lackey (Fr.) joined
forces to win the #2 doubles 8-6
and Meredith Miller (Jr.) won the
#5 singles 7-6, 6-4.
The Lady Bishops soon faced
Christopher Newport and lost a
close game 4-5. Catherine Gorrell

The Battling Bishops then
went on a four game losing streak,
including two losses to conference
opponent Chowan College, 3-4,
2-16.
The next four games would be
against conference rivals Averett
University and Greensboro
College. The Bishops split with
both teams, 6-2, 3-21 against
Averett and 4-3, 7-10 against
Greensboro.
In an annual meeting with
division two rival Barton College,
the Cougars in game one 9-0, but
wound up splitting with a 2-4 loss
in game two.
The Bishops started April with
a sweep of Virginia Wesleyan, 1-
0 and 6-3. In game one, Dodson
pitched a shutout, while Marquita
Petrillo had the game’s only RBI.
Heather Petrillo picked up the win
in game two, as infielder Missy
Hunt (Jr.) led the team by going
3-4 from the plate and two RBI’s.
Following the sweep of the
Marlins, the Bishops suffered
twin conference losses to Ferrum,
0-3 and 2-6.
The Lady Bishops managed to
make a huge comeback with their
games against Shenandoah.
In game one, the Bishops
scored 12 runs on 12 hits for their
biggest victory of the season 12-
0. In game two, the Bishops kept
the momentum going to win 9-1.
The Bishops continued their
stellar play with a sweep of Peace
College 8-1 and 8-5.
Against Peace College’s sister
institution, Meredith College, the
Bishops dished out a 8-0 blanking
in game one, but suffered a 6-12
loss for game two.
The Lady Bishops, currently
13-17 for the season and 4-6 in
the conference, have two more
games left before the Dixie
Conference Tournament (Apr 19-
21).

ence play traveling to Newport
News, Va., for a double-header
against the Captains of Chris
topher Newport University. The
Bishops dropped the first game 4-
17 but came back to win the
second game 7-6.

Wesleyan received Dixie Con
ference honors for the week.
Amy Dodson, a junior from
Kilmarnock, Va., (Northumber
land H.S.), was named the
Softball Pitcher of the Week for
March 25-31.
She was 3-0 on the week with
a sparkling 0.95 earned run
average. In 19 innings she gave
up 17 hits and two earned runs
with seven strikeouts. Two of her
wins were against Dixie Con
ference opponents Methodist
received Dixie Conference
Rookie-of-the-Week honors for
their play.
Bizzell is also currently tied for
first in the conference in triples
with five in 26 games played (.19
percent).
Senior pitcher Carl Wheeless
is tied for fourth in the conference
in individual pitching with a 2.31
ERA.
Wesleyan will soon begin
Dixie Conference Tournament
play.

John Tejada was named the
Dixie Conference Baseball
Rookie Pitcher of the Week for
March 18-24. The freshman from
Brooklyn, N.Y., (Beach Channel
H.S.), received his honor in spite
of losing the game.
Tejada started against
LaGrange College and went the
distance, losing 1-2. He gave up
no earned runs and struck out 11
batters.
He had a no-hitter going into
the seventh inning.
