Tennis teams trying to end season on more hopeful note APRIL 19,2002 — THE DECREE — PAGE 7 (Continued from Previous Page) (So.) won #1 singles 6-2, 6-1, Kristin Haring (Jr.) won #2 singles 4-6, 6-0, 6-0, and Miller won #5 singles 6-3, 7-5. In doubles play, Gorrell and Haring won #1 doubles 8-2. Three days later, the Lady Bishops lost 3-6 to conference rival Averett. All three victories for the Bishops were the result of Gorrell and Haring. In singles, Gorrell won 6-1, 6-1 and Haring won 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4). Gorrell and Haring continued their onslaught in doubles, winning 8- 5. On April 4, the Lady Bishops earned their first victory of the season against Guilford 7-2. Singles matches for the Bishops were won by Gorrell 6-0, 6-0, Haring 6-2, 6-1, St. George 6-3, 6-1, and Miller 6-2, 6-2. The Bishops then swept the Quakers in doubles: Gorrell and Haring won 8-1, Lackey and Miller won 8-3, and Jill Fulton (Sr.) and St. George won 8-1. The Men’s Team is still strugghng with their hitting power as they are now 0-10 over all and 0-5 in conference play. In conference play, Ferrum, CNU, and Averett, each blanked the Bishops 0-7, respectively. The Bishops suffered back to back 1-6 losses to Guilford and Villa Julie. Corey Drakeford (So.) won his #6 singles match against Guilford 6-1, 6-0, and Eric Allen (Sr.) won a stunning #1 singles victory against Villa Julie 4-6, 7- 6 (10-8), 7-6 (8-6). Unfortunately, the Bishops couldn’t win a single match in their 0-7 loss to Lynchburg.
