Dr. Rodney Austin, Chemistry
Kwabena Boakye (Chemistry
B.S. ‘02) is in his second year of
the Doctoral of Pharnnacy (Pharm.
D) progrann at Temple University.
In a recent email Kwabena said:
“I just started the Second Profes
sional Year. I’m doing well now
compared to the very first semester
of first year where I struggled ad
justing to things down here.” Well,
I guess it should be “up there,” but
Kwabena seems to be doing well.
Parting Shot
While attending this year’s
Founders Day ceremonies, I was
struck by the lack of student par
ticipation.
North Carolina Wesleyan has a
rich and important history and we
should all be proud of it. We are
a part of that history now, and as
such, need to be aware of where
we come from.
Is it really so much to ask of us,
to give up a couple hours of our
lives, to remember those people
who made it possible for us to
be here, instead of in some state
school, where you are a nameless
number on a tally sheet?
The saddest part of it is that sev
eral students who were the recipi
ents of various scholarship awards
did not attend their own recognition
ceremony so that they could thank
Music at Mims

of jam sessions and heart-breaking
blues, to the creature comforts of a
good cup of coffee, McRay pays ar
tistic homage to both the significant
and seemingly insignificant aspects
of American life. From heart to
paintbrush, it is McRay’s bold color
with energized contemporary de
sign that brings his themes to life.
“Oh, I can hear the music!” some
one said about his recent Mims
Gallery pictures.
Southern Living Magazine re
cently featured McRay’s life story
and art, telling how his faith in God
changed the course of his life to his
true calling—art. The artist graduat
ed with honors from the prestigious
Maryland Institute College of Art
and has since pursued his career
as a full-time painter, making a liv
ing selling his works. He has pre
sented numerous solo exhibitions
and has pictures in the permanent
collections of SAS, Texas Gulf, and
Central Carolina Bank, to name
a few. He has been critically ac
claimed in numerous publications
and on TV and is the current presi
dent of Raleigh’s Artspace Studios.
Special guest George Higgs
provided live music in the gallery
during McRay’s opening. Higgs is
a nationally known bluesman from
Princeville, N.C., and is known for
his sweet melodic vocal styling of
songs he has written, as well as for
traditional blues favorites.
Teresa Rossi (Biology B.S. ‘01
Chemistry B.A. ’02) is currently
enrolled in a Medical Technology
program in Southern Florida where
she and her husband live.
Recently Teresa wrote me about
her decision to enter the Medical
Technology program: “Well, I am
in the med-tech program full time!
I decided I would rather be chal
lenged on a job that will allow me to
learn for the rest of my career than
take a job I would be very bored
with in 2 months!” Teresa hopes
to sit for the National Exam next
December.
