VolUME XX, NUMbER 5 5 t ■OpiNiON PAr.F North College Day African of 51 Carolina (NCWC) Program American percent. Wesleyan Traditional has an population There are only three African American professors at NCWC Traditional Day Program. Surely this is a clearform of ^scriminatlon. It is important for the African American students, who make up the majority of the population, to see African American Professors in the role of Instructors, because this builds an image of possibilities. There are numerous African Americans employed as secretaries and janitors at North Carolina Wesleyan College, but very few of “Privatizing Discrimination’ A Student Editorial By Anthony i-iawkins-Tobias these African Americans hold Doctorate Degrees. Not only is employing more African American Doctorates good for the African American students but for all of the students because it creates diversity in learning patterns, which can only be gained through experience. As an African American, I would like to leave North Carolina Wesleyan College with the assurance of knowing that with the required credentials that I may return and be a Professor. It is my belief, if I am of quality to be educated at NCWC then that quality I possess should afford me an Instructor’s position. In the same manner if my money is good enough for North Carolina Wesleyan College to accept than dispersing money to qualified African American Professors should not be a difficult task, especially with the cost of tuition at this private institution. I have opened the discussion up with the student government association. I believe the majority of the student population here at NCWC is aware of the condition but feel they have no voice, or don’t know the best way of addressing the issue. I believe that openly addressing the lack of African American professors at North Carolina Wesleyan College could bring about a sudden change. Administration Response By Vice President of the College Daniel S. Bozik North Carolina Wesleyan College takes very seriously the commitment to hiring qualified minority candidates. We make every effort, in every position opening, to locate and hire the most qualified candidates and will continue to do so. We would be pleased to encourage the involvement of the student government association and would welcome working with them to secure qualified applicants. NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN COLLEGE Picture Poll By Staff Photographer: Evelyn Hunter Geneva Fuller Greensboro, NC “I was shocked that Bush won. However, Kerry had knowledge but no plans to put forth what he proposed. Kerry knew what Jhe was talking about but didn’t ■have an effective plan to carry ■ his ideas out.” We sent our roving photographer out and about on campus to speak to students and ask their feelings about the 2004 Presidential Election. Scott Marsigli Rocky Mount, NC “I am extremely disappointed with the election because I am a Democrat. I feel that Bush is killing our economy.” Sharon Sweeley Roanoke Rapids, NC I was surprised that Bush won because I had heard so much on the radio and television about the African-American community supporting Kerry. According to the reports on both radio and television, the African- American community felt that Kerry would help them.” Greg Sember Nashville, NC “The 2004 Presidential Election is business as usual- there is still too much money, too few people voting, and too many votes not being counted. However, I am glad that we have a clear cut winner. I hope that Bush does not misread his mandate to overly regulate our private lives. Thank Heavens, though, that America flushed the Johns!” Amber Lesane Baltimore, MD “I’m not surprised because neither candidate had a good platform. But Bush was better at conveying his platform and was assertive and confident at a time when the country is at war. He put out a self-assured, confident image and voters responded to that. Who wants an unsure president?” Brad Wingo Rocky Mount, NC “I am pleased with the outcome. I am quite passionate about this great country and the recent election had been weighing heavily on my mind. I am proud that my fellow conservative Americans- contrary to the liberal media’s approximation- found the moral aspect of this election decision all important. I believe the majority of Americans favored and chose a strong leader who isn’t afraid to stand for what he believes in and takes into consideration this country’s best interests as opposed to those of outside influences. Regardless, I hope and pray Americans come together as never before to unite and grow. God Bless America! NortIh CaroUna WesIevan CollEqE Rocky Mount, NortIh CaroIIna 27804
