VoLume XX, NuMbER LeItqvers The Power of the Majority A Student Editorial By Anthony Hawkins-Tobias With only onefull-tlmeAfrlcanAmerican Professor at North Carolina Wesleyan College Day Program, how is the African American student to survive this journey of higher education? Last year’s statistics indicated only 11% of African American males graduate from NCWC, according to Dr. Vann Newkirk, Associate Vice President of Institutional Research. The issue is clear that the resources, concern and care to retain the African America male do not reside in the walls of this institution. It strikes me that students are accepted to this institution solely for financial gain and are not receiving the educational promises guaranteed. call forthe African American students, as major investors, to collectively and intelligently demand reformation in the faculty-hiring process which will lead to an ethnically diverse college. The college should: ■ disclose the hiring procedures in effect, ■ publicize starting salaries for all positions, and allow more African American students to be part of the faculty hiring event, addition, the institution should educate the student body here at NCWC by giving seminars on the qualifications needed for graduate level studies in essence “growing our own faculty”. Personally, I havegrown unsympathetic and fatigued of the excuses used to justify the lack of African American Doctorates at this college. I have heard everything from “we can’t afford them” to “there is a lack of applicants” to this campus. My concentration as a student here at NCWC is the ratio of African American Doctorates to the percentage of African American students. The percentage of African American Doctorates at other Universities and Colleges has no validity or bearing here at NCWC. We shall not be followers on this issue but set the example for the other institutions. Under the current administration there is a laissez faire attitude on hiring African American Doctorates. For example, why doesn’t the college aggressively recruit from graduate programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities? Why did the college stop placing position advertisements in the black magazines of higher education beyond 2001? I am certain an African American, spiritually oriented President here at this college would have the knowledge and the expertise to attract African American Professors. The magazine, Black Issue in Higher Education, October 2003, declares that it is possible to recruit and retain diverse faculty if this is a vital goal of the administration. With more African American professors intact, just maybe, The Jefferson Pilot Award recipients on the wall, in the Braswell Administration lobby, will have more color and accurately reflect the NCWC student body diversity. Also this would create role models in the community. Finally, let’s exercise our rights as the majority to bring about needed changes in diversifying faculty here at NCWC. 1 IS Safety from pg. The problem in Phaiah’s view not the nunnber of officers. “We can add more officers but there is only so much they can do. For instance, is the situation they are responding to outside of their control? Will the student have to wait for me or an RD? Will they have to wait for a police officer with a side-arm? Do you want an officer with a side-arm on campus? Some want it and some don’t.” One of the major areas of concern campus attempting to pick up young girls. “If I had been out there where I should have been, maybe I could have done something, but as it was, by the time I did got out there the van was gone. I didn’t get a license number or anything.” Jones discussed the many tasks that the officers must perform during an 8 hour shift, tasks which include; lock and unlock doors as needed, assist with disabled vehicles (Jump Start), respond to emergencies, . , , . '/> ■ 11^1 yci loico, was with the time it takes for security direct visitors, accompany vendors to respond to a call. The major hold up, according to Jakie Jones, is that they (Securitas officers) spend much of their day unlocking doors for students. “You all are young adults,” Jones stated, “the time we spend letting you all into your rooms, we could spend patrolling the campus. How often do you really need to be let in? I get locked down in my office making duplicate ID’S. How many ID’s are you going to lose in one year?” Jones presented an example; Once while making ID’s, her office received a call concerning a van circling in residence halls, “hat patrol” in the cafeteria during meals, escort students as requested and several others. Jones emphasized that if students could be more responsible (concerning lock-outs and ID Cards) that it would allow the officers to do a more effective job. The bottom line of the question ‘and’ answer period was that the students feel there is not enough security, the administration feels they are getting their money’s worth, and Securitas simply feels overwhelmed. Movies from pg. 2 steal an egg as the “new” twelfth criminal by pretending to be.. Julia Roberts. Oh, Christ. I was angry due to earlier events in the movie, particularly the nearly constant references to the 1990 film “Miller’s Crossing” (Which is the greatest movie of the 90s and one of my favorite movies... watch it). When Albert Finney who was in “Miller’s Crossing”, showed up in “Ocean’s Twelve”, I was ready to set the reel on fire. The Julia Roberts thing made me want to leave the theater As 1 prepared to leave, I found that I could not get up, I had slumped so much from boredom and anger that I did not have the willpower left to leave. 1 watched the rest of the movie and pondered why all “Ocean’s Twelve” were so happy considering they had lost all of their money why Catherine Zeta-Jones didn’t realize that she had been basically blackmailed into taking Rusty (Brad Pitt) back, why “Ocean’s Twelve” didn’t simply kill Andy Garcia, and why I was watching this movie when 1 could have been watching something, anything, better than this damn thing that calls itself a movie. Thank god I snuck in to see it, or I’d be really pissed. Do you have a good feeling when you help others? Do you know the TRUE meaning of giving of yourself? If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, then come to the Student Support Office (PC 188). We need volunteers to assist us in posting Braille signage throughout the campus to aid your fellow students with visual impairments. .4m^, Well, gang, this issue I’m ticked off at the RIGHT, the GOP, and in particular (Boy this hurts) FOX News. This is not to say that I am becoming a bleedinq heart, liberal, CNN-watching, Dan Rather Fan, tree hugger, no, notate 1 am as proud a 90% conservative as always. But, over the last few weeks there has been a situation taking place that pisses off this old Marine. NoRTh CARoliNA WesIevan CollEqE Rocky Mount, NortM CaroIIna 27804 Professor Ward Churchill of University of Colorado is being raked over the proverbial coals by conservative pundits for statements he made. The major one was his direct comparison between the people killed in the Trade Center attack on 9-11 and Nazis. Specifically he called them “li Eichmanns” referring of course to Nazi butcher Adolf Eichmann. Now, as disgusting and just plain stupid and moronic as I, and anyone else with 2/3 of functioning brain tissue, see these comments to be. Professor Churchill has the right to say them. As many of you know, my family (meaning me, my dad, my uncles, and my sons) are all military men and most of us are combat veterans. What’s my point you ask? Here is, we have served, and continue to serve our country, so that individuals like Mr. Churchill CAN stand up and say whatever he damn well pleases. That’s the beauty of America and t rights given by the first amendment. To voice one’s opinion is a right tf we all have, and a right some take for granted too often. And that is a shame, because when people exercise their rights they find that they really do what they were intended to do. So, I say, let Churchill and everyone like him talk all they want, without fear of reprisal for doing so. When they make comparisons lile Churchill did, it only makes the radical left irrelevant. After all, Eichmann and his boss were not real big on freedom of speech, unless your name was Hitler. I hope individuals like Ward Churchill never go away. They do serve a purpose, you know, and that is to be walking contradictions. I can think of no better evidence of how the American system works, than to have people stand up and say how it doesn’t and not get hauled off to some prison somewhere. So leave Churchill alone. Many Americans have risked their lives, and continue to do so today, so that he can be as big a moron as he wants. Like him or not, like me or not, support the rights afforded to us all by virtue of being born Americans.
