YOUR UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION Do you know that you can lose your unemployment compensation benefits for a year? Do you know that you can be im prisoned forfailing to list odd earnings when you are on short time? Do you know that you are not eligi ble to draw unemployment compensa tion the weeks you are laid off if you are sick? Unemployment is not for the sick or disabled. If you are laid off for a week, and you are sick during that week, you are not entitled to unemployment in surance. You are given a form, NCUC 501, each week that you work for which there is not at least 60% of your regu lar work available, and in which week you do not make more than the ineligible amount determined by the Unemploy ment Compensation Commission. When you sign this form to draw your unem ployment insurance, you sign a state ment that you were able and available for work during the entire week. The same applies whether you work part of the week or whether you do not work at all during the week. Employees sched uled to work part of a week, but who fail to report any part of the week for which work is available, are not eligible to draw for any part of the week. Let's take an example; Suppose your depart ment is scheduled to run three days this week and you are unable to work one day. Your failure to work one day makes you ineligible for insurance during that week. If you are temporarily laid off, or you are on short time, you must report all your earnings, whether your earn ings represent work performed at your regular job or some other job. Let's take another example: Suppose you are a knitter and your machines run for two days this week. You find work on Satur day at a service station. In filing a partial claim for unemployment in surance for this week, you must report the money you earn at the service sta- tion. Failure to report such earnings makes you liable to a fine, imprison ment, or cancellation of your benefits for twelve months. You will note on your partial claim form, NCUC 501, that when you file your claim for par tial payment, you sign a statement that you have received no earnings other than those reported above your signature. Your unemployment insurance is paid for by your employer and is ad- ministeredbythe Employment Security Commission to provide income for you when there is no work available for you. To be eligible to draw your unemploy ment insurance, you must be able to work. This means you must be able the entire week for which you sign. In filing your claim for unemploy ment insurance, you must report your earnings from all sources during the week for which you file. Any time you have any question re garding your unemployment insurance, ask your foremanor the Personnel De partment. If we do not have the an swers, we will call the Employment Security Commission for you. a careless person is an accident on its way to happen 21 - why be in a hurry— to have an accident
