reside at 108 Center Street in Kern-
ersville. P. C. is also employed at
Plant #4 as a boarder with more than
15 years of service. They have one
son, Ronald, who is employed by
Piedmont Airlines in Winston-Salem,
and one grandson.
When Grover
Crews retired in
February, he was
presented a beauti
ful reclining chair
by his fellow em
ployees. Super
intendent Howard
Young made the
presentation, com
plimenting Grover
on the fine job he
had done during Grover Crews
his forty-four years of service. In
this time, he had watched Adams-
Millis Corporation's Kernersville
plant grow from 3, 000 square feet to
100, 000 square feet. Superintendent
Young expressed regret at Grover's
retirement and wished him a most en
joyable future. Grover and his friends
then enjoyed ten home-baked cakes, on
one of which was inscribed "Best
wishes--44 Years."
In October of 1920, a young farm
boy, after harvesting his crops, ven
tured to the new Kernersville Knitting
Company, seeking a job with better
opportunities and more pay. After
talking with the superintendent, he
convinced him that he would work and
make a good hand. His first work was
boarding, on which job he remained
for about a year. At that time, the
entire operation was in one room--the
room now used for Plant #4 yarn stor
age. Grover was next given an oppor
tunity to learn to knit, and was on the
second shift for 10 years; then, he
was promoted to first shift for another
10 years. With the need for fixers.
he was taught to fix and transferred to
the second shift. In addition to board
ing, knitting and fixing, Grover has
had many other job experiences, such
as cleaning, sweeping, yard work and
miscellaneous plant repairs. Wherever
the need existed, Grover always cheer
fully did the job that was assigned to
him.
Grover was born and reared in
the Pine Grove section, near Kerners
ville. He married Miss Daisy West, of
Oak Ridge. They have a daughter and
two sons. The daughter, Elaine, is
married to Patrolman Sizemore and
lives in Kernersville. One son, Arthur,
is a graduate of N. C. State College
with a Master's Degree in Aeronautical
Engineering and is employed with Grum
man Aircraft Company in Long Island,
N. Y. The youngest son. Tommy, is
a junior at East Forsyth High School.
The Crews have five grandchildren.
It should be noted that Grover has
perfect attendance for all of the nearly
45 years of service with Adams-Millis
for according to his record, he has
never missed a work day. Also, Grover
is certainly due commendation for his
abilities to do more than just the eight-
hour shift at Adams-Millis, for he has
built 18 homes, including the modern
one he now lives in. He made the brick
he used and did practically all the work
himself.
Grover's mode of travel to and
from work is one of economy--he rides
a bicycle (which helps the crowded
parking conditions at Plant #4) even
though he has a nice car and a good
truck.
Grover concedes that his many
accomplishments in life have been
possible only with the help and assist
ance of his wife, Daisy, whom he likes
to share in his recognition.
The Crews family are regular
members of the Moravia Moravian
Church near Oak Ridge, where Grover
was recently recognized for five years
of perfect attendance in Sunday school.
