MEET YOUR SUPERVISOR
Mrs. Dorothy Mabe
"I never did think about being a
supervisor until there was a vacancy
in the Pairing Department and I was
told that I would be in charge of the
department, " Dorothy Mabe said when
discussing her experience as forelady
of ninety ladies in the Pairing Depart
ment of the new finishing plant in
Kernersville. It was no surprise to
those in the department because she
had been an assistant to the super
visor in the capacity of quality control
inspector. She had already displayed
her leadership and ability to get re
sults through other people.
She was employed in September
of 1955 as a spot inspector in the pair
ing room. She worked with Mrs. Leila
Carson in the Sample Department about
three months, learning the fundamentals
of pairing. Her next assignment was
sampling the finished work of the pair-
ers to see that the standards of quality
were maintained.
In i960. Dot Mabe became super
visor of pairing. She was already ac
quainted with every employee and still
works as one of them. It is this sense
of togetherness and belonging that
creates the teamwork that is so evident.
"I go to bat for them, and they go to
bat for me, " says Dot. "I'm really
proud of the department and the people
in it. They are a most loyal group,
giving their best at all times. "
Dot is proud, too, of the safety
record of her department. Since she
has been supervisor of pairing, there
has been no lost-time accident. "When
I read or hear of an accident in some
other plant or department, I think it
could be one of us. I talk to all of
those in my department about working
safely and continue to stress working
the safe way. I also try to point out
the necessity of looking out for the
other person. "
She was born in Rockingham
County, but her family moved to
Phoenix, Arizona, when Dot was a
small child. She returned to North
Carolina in 1939 and graduated from
Walkertown High School in 1940. She
worked with R. J. Reynolds Tobacco
Company from 1941 to 1947.
Silver Wedding This Year
On November 19, 1941, Dorothy
Isley married John Mabe, who is em
ployed with Hometown Buick Company
in Kernersville. They are members
of Love's Methodist Church in
Walkertown.
Although she was not employed
from 1947 to 1955, Dot was busy.
She made most of her clothes as well
as those of her sisters and her mother.
She always liked to design and make
her own clothing, although she finds
it difficult now with full-time employ
ment and housekeeping.
