Page 2 April 19S A Chat With The Chairman We often hear discussions about education. We hear of changes that have been made, others that are being made, and of others that need to be made. Education is so often in the news with good reason. It is fundamental to our lives. All progress is based on edu cation. With that brief preface, let me call to your attention some of the educational opportunities available to members of the Adams-MiUis Family. For some time we have offered an Educational As sistance Program to any employee who successfully com pletes training or education courses through approved educational agencies. In the past many employees have taken advantage of this program and we hope that more will avail themselves of it in the future. If you would like to know more about this program, please see your supervisor or personnel depart ment. We participate too in the General Education Develop ment (GED) Program whereby anyone who has not received a high school diploma can, by successfully completing the GED exam, receive their high school diploma equivalent. You will read more about this in the next issue of the Amco News. Still another opportunity for Adams-Millis employees is .he Minis Scholarship established through High Point Col lege three years ago. It is available to dependents of Adams-Millis employees. We congratulate three young people who were recently named winners of the Millis Scholarship for 1987-88. They are John K. Richardson of Mount Airy, Karen R. Welch and Pamela J. Thomas of High Point. We wish them continued success in their educational endeavors. All these programs are extremely important not only to persons who take advantage of them but also to their fam ilies, to Adams-Millis and to their communities. Just as we recognize the importance of education we also recognize the milestones we achieve in it. Graduations from various levels of education have long been a source of pride and accomplishment for students and their families. We are eager to share in that pride with you this year During the coming weeks, many folks associated with Adams-Millis wiU be going through graduation exercises from high schools and colleges. We commend them for their achievements and wish them the best in their future en deavors. We must never cease our quest to gain new knowledge Education is very important to us all. Sharing and cel ebrating our accomplishments in it are important as well. • • • t The President’s Corner One of the so-called magic words in the success of any company is “productivity.” We have talked about productivity many times in the past and we will address the matter many times in the future. The reason, Adams-Millis Corporation is dependent on high productivity to compete in a marketplace which daily becomes more and more competitive. The company tries to do everything possible to maximize productivity. Changes are made con stantly to improve the work environment to make our tasks easier, less complicated and more ef ficient. This leads to increased productivity. These changes may result from situations ob served by someone in top management, a supervisor or a production line employee. We strongly en courage participation by everyone in finding ways to increase productivity. Greater productivity does not necessarily result from working harder, faster or longer. Today with the rapid changes in technology we just have to work smarter. Sorneone who operates a knitting machine or a dye machine many times is in a better position to deter mine ways of simplifying a job, saving time, energy or money, each of which results in greater pro ductivity. Late in 1986 and during the first half of 1987, Adams-Millis has invested heavily in new ma chinery for Plants 4 and 6. Through this investment the company tries to improve productivity. However, equipment doesn’t do the job alone. Each member of the Adams-Millis Family is an es- chain of production which puts the best hosiery products in the marketplace. Whether you are involved in knitting, dying, tes- ing, marketing, computer operations, transport ation or any of many other functions within the company your performance is essential to making the final product. Top quality, timely delivery and customer satis- action result from high productivity. Its those three ac ors that strengthen the company providing a rig ter future and even greater security for every one in the Adams-Millis Family. / /h AMCO NEWS April 1987 Vol. 43, No. 1 Credit Union Cites A-M Trio Credit Union Can Help A-M Store AMCO NEWS is edited and produced quarterly by Adams-Millis Corporation, 225 North Elm Street, High Point, North Carolina.
