October Issue SEW IT SEAMS Page Three Cur Plant At Independence Few Anvil Brand employees have had the opportunity to see the plant at Independence, Va., so Sew It Seams has provided the pictures on this page. They show a portion of the sewing room, the front of the plant, and the third is a moun tain scene as viewed from the load ing platform at the rear of the building. David L. Stanton, of the Sherrod division, tells us that utility pants went into production in the Inde pendence plant on July 4, 1951. The building had been constructed by men with other business interests at Independence and leased to the Sherrod Shirt Company. It came into the Anvil Brand family at the same time the Sherrod interests here were purchased. Also, Stanton points out, there were no experienced garment fac tory employees in Independence at that time and each operator had to go through a period of training. Today about 50 operators are em ployed there, a supervisor, a secre tary, and Williard Hussey as su perintendent. Production Manager Jack Rives says the Independence division is turning out a first class garment, production is increasing, and new machinery and other improvements — such as new lights — are being added. The pants made there are completely finished before being sent to High Point for distribution to Anvil Brand customers. Free Redecorating Booklet Available For those who are fans of the booming “do-it-yourself” trend, and planning on a bit of redecorat ing in their homes this fall, Du Pont Finishers Division has come out with a new 36 page “how-to- do-it” booklet. It tells the correct type of paint for various projects and guides the unskilled painter through the best and easiest ways of using it. It is well illustrated and tells how to finish walls and ceilings, how to finish woodwork, how to finish floors, how to finish furniture, and the how of house painting. There are pointers on mixing paint, caring for the brush, the amount of paint required to cover a surface, points on storing, and numerous other tips for the ama teur.
