Page Eight THE CAMPUS ECHO Friday, April 29, I960 Athlete Of The Month Robinson Honors NCC By Victories By Chester Mallory Man made rockets to speed through space, but God made) Vance Robinson to win track victories throughout the world. This month my compass is pointed directly to an athleta who deserves more than the honors bestowed upon him. This athlete is none other than Vance Robinson, a speedster from the tidewater section of Norfolk, Va., and a graduate of Norfolk’s Booker T. Washington High School. Vance came to NCC as a great potential track star, after being sought by a number of other colleges. The flashy cinderman is now 21 years old and a senior, ma joring in physical education and minoring in biology. In spite ofi his athletic inclinations, he plana to start a small business in California. Vance was selected “Athlete of the Month” because of his splendid record-breaking per formances in both indoor and outdoor track events and for being a candidate for the Olym pics. The lad ranks fifth in the world among trackmen and holds the 100-yard dash time of 9.5, the world-record being held by Ray Norton and Mel Patton with a time of 9.3. Vance alsq has been clocked at 20.6 in the 220-yard dash (200 meters). Last summer Vance wore the United States uniform in the Russian and American and the Pan Hellenic meets. Head Track Coach Leroy Walker had this to say: “Robin son is a fine man; he could be one of the best 200 meter men in the world. (Now he is ranked fifth.) I must say in spite of the toughness of the Olympics he has a very good chance ol making the team. I am definite ly certain that he can run better than the qualified time which is 21.04.” In answering my question; “Who is responsible for your success as a track star?” Vance answered: “Well, my high school coach, Leroy Porter, stimulated my interest in track; after that Coach Walker took over and helped me develop my techniques and skills.” In his spare time, Vance pays close attention to new drama shows. He considers himself, somewhat of an amateur critic. Certainly our athlete has honor ed our school in honoring him self.
