Friday, September 30, 1960 THE CAMPUS ECHO Page Nine Eagles Edge Morris Brown 8*6 By John A. Holley North Carolina College’s Luther Jeralds crashed through Morris Brown , College’s de fense to block a fourth quarter punt in the end zone to give the^ Eagles a safety and an 8-6 tri umph over the homeground Wolverines. The Eagles, playing with new zest, scored in the opening period when Rossie Barfield went off his own right tackle, cut back to the center of the field, and skirted 33 yards to paydirt to cap a 72-yard TD drive. The scoring drive used up only five plays. Morris Brown, fighting despe- ratoly for a comeback, managed to score with 2:18 seconds re maining in the second quarter when Don Cambridge dove through the middle of the Eagles’ tight defense for the Wolverines’ touchdown from three yards out. Jeralds, a 250- pound guard, dove through to block the attempted kicking conversion as it sailed off Johnnie Davis’ toe. The Eagles dominated the game throughout the tilt, fail ing to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities. The score reptiained knotted 6-6 until late in the fourth period when Reggie Pryor, the Eagles’ spark ling quarterback, boomed one of his punts dead at 'the Wolve rines’ two-yard line. The Morris Brown eleven, with their backs to the goal line, tried unsuccessfully to advance the ball out of the danger zone on two downs, but were helpless against a vicious NCC forward wall. On the third down, Davis stepped back in the end zone to punt. But NCC’s charging line with Robert Currington and Walt Browning crashing in on both sides, put the pressure on Davis, and Jeralds blasted through the middle to block the punt off Davis’ foot. Sparkling performances were turned in by Jeralds, who only a few days ago had received the okay from the NCC physicians to play this season. Currington, who played a whale of a defen sive game from the terminal post; and Harvey Ramseur, team captain, who was a steady per former for the entire game from his linebacking spot. Other outstanding roles were turned in by James Brewington, Charles Hinton, James Bryant, and Frank Gardner, the crux of the Eagles’ middle attack on the line. Pryor, in addition to booming the pigskin in pursuit of his 4th successive CIAA punting title, played a terrific game as the Eagles’ signal caller. Football Class Last week the football teami sponsored a “hep” rally for Eagles who desired to be briefed on the ins and outs of football. The idea was to help desiring students recognize and under stand the original- and complex plays carried out in regular games. Members of the team an nounced the plays over a micro phone with a brief description while elect players carried out the plays on the ball court. The tennis-clad footballers gave enactments of the tight T, the spread pimt, tight punt, the shoulder block, the hook block, and the shield block. Mr. Edward Boyd, a CIAA re presentative, discussed changes) in rules for the football season. The major rule change was the substitution. The old rule has been changed to allow for a “Wild Card Substitution.” Thisi means that a coach may send in one substitute at any time while the clock is running. After “class,” the cheerlead- ing squad led the crowd in a round of roaring cheers. WELCOME N. C. COLLEGE STUDENTS TO DURHAM AND TO ROSE’S 5-10-25 CENTS STORE 317 -19 W.
