page 8 Friday, September 28, 1984 FEATURES Acclaimed singer stars in Caf^ tonight Singer-dancer-comedienne Jenifer Lewis brings her outstanding one- woman show,“From Billie to Lena With Jenny,” to a dinner theatre per formance tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the W.G. Pearson Cafeteria. Students need to pick up tickets at the Union. There is no charge if you have a student I.D. The show is sponsored by University Food Service and the Alfonso Elder Student Union. Miss Lewis has appeared with Bette Milder in her nationwide “De Tour '83’' before returning to New York Ci ty to continue her one-woman show. Miss Lewis most recently appeared on Broadway in “Rock ’N Roll: The First 5,000 Years” as Diana Ross and Donna Summer, a production was choreographed and directed by Joe Layton. Her other Broadway appearances in clude roles in “Eubie,” “Cornin’ Up town” and “Baggy Pants and Com pany.” Off Broadway, Miss Lewis appeared in Patricia Birch’s productions of “El Bravo!” at the Entermedia Theatre and in “Sister Aimee” on Theatre Row. Miss Lewis had the distinction of be ing the first creator of the role of Effie in the early workshop productions of “Dreamgirls,” directed by Michael Bennett of “A Chorus Line” fame. Last season, she performed the title role in “Mahalia!” (based on the life of Mahalia Jackson) to outstanding notice on its pre-Broadway tryout at the Hartman Theatre. For her performance as Nell in the Pennsylvania Stage Company’s pro duction of “Ain’t Misbehavin,” Miss Lewis again received critical acclaim for her stellar renditions of “Honeysuckley Rose” and “Cash for Your Trash.” In a review of her nightclub act, “Hot!”, the New York Times wrote: “(Lewis) already has the aura and the confidence and the projection of a star. Ms. Fernandez, star of the film “Diva,” may be remembered by Triangle area audiences for her por trayal of Bess in the North Carolina Opera Company production of “Porgy and Bess,” which was featured as part of the Duke Artist Series in 1981. A native of Philadelphia, Ms. Fernandez spent the ’83-’84 season singing “Adia” in Paris, perform ing in “Faust” in both Detroit and Dayton, and appeared in Verdi’s “Reqieum” with the Fort Worth Opera and in France. She perform ed recitals in Paris, and her U.S. tour took her to Kansas, Penn sylvania, Iowa, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Texas, and Washington D.C. Ms. Fernandez began her vocal training in high school and con tinued her studies at Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts prior to receiving a full scholarship to Julliard School of Music. She cur rently studies with Marlene Malas in New York. Ms. Fernandez will be accom panied on piano by George Darden. She will open her Duke concert with works by Shumann, Richard Strauss, Joseph Canteloube and John Carter. Following intermis sion, she will perform Gershwin’s “ ’S Wonderful,” “The Man 1 Love,” “Love Is Here to Stay” and “By Strauss,” as well as works by Joaquin Rodrigo and Federico Longas.
