The countdown is on for one of ti» most exciting
events happening this year at NCCU. Chancellor Julius
LcVonne Chambers, NCCU's eighth chief administra
tor, will officially take office next Friday, October 22,
during a ceremony to be held at McLendon-McDougald
Gymnasium. All classes that normally meet between
10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Fridays will be cancelled so
that students and faculty may attend the event. The
installation ceremony is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.
Inaugural Committee Co-Chair Sarah Bell-Lucas and
her fellow committee members have been planning the
event since early March. Ms. Bell-Lucas explained that
around 7,000 invitations went out in August to students,
faculty, staff, alumni, special friends of the University
and delegates from every university in the United States.
W^th the inauguration of Duke’s new President sched
uled for Saturday the 23rd, responses have been heavy.
In addition to the ceremony itself, a wide variety of
events has been planned to celebrate the installation of
Chambers. Departments across campus have scheduled
several symposiums, displays, presentations, lectures
and panels beginning this Sunday and continuing
throughout the week. (See Schedule of Events.)
Ms. Bell-Lucas also explained that a large number of
NCCU's distinguished faculty and alumni will be par
ticipating in the week’s events. The Honorable Eva
Clayton of the U.S. House of Representatives will be
speaking at the Scholarship Banquet honoring Chancellor
Chambers on Tuesday. The Honorable Mickey Michaux
and Jeannie Lucas of the N.C. House of Representatives
