Page 6, April 8t ^994 NCCU Touring Choir Returns from Spring Break Tour By Dena Moss Contributing Reporter Once again the time has arrived for North Carolina Central University’s Touring Choir to embark on yet an other spring break filled with excitement and music. For the past 25 years, Dr. Charles Gilchrist has led the choir to excellence in music. Gilchrist, along with his dedi cated and talented assistant Grover Wilson, has made the choir known in many cities and states across the United States. On March 25, the choir will head to Pittsburg, Pa. This will begin a two week tour that will include Detroit, Mich.; Youngstown, Ohio; Hackensack, N.J.; New York, N.Y.; Philadelphia, Pa.; and Washington, DC. The choir will visit various churches and colleges, performing a com bination of musical selections. Along with Wilson, Gilchrist has enriched the life of each student who has had the privilege of being a member of NCCU’s Touring Choir. Members are chosen through careful selection by auditions. Once a member, they are expected to exhibit a sense of responsibility and commitment. The long hours that are required to perfect the quality and sound of each piece of music makes these two attributes a must. The introduction of music ranging from classical, gospel, spirituals, art songs and jazz allows choir members the opportunity to develop an appreciation for various cul tures and life styles. This is one of the many reasons that the touring choir is appreciated by people of all races and backgrounds. For area performances, the touring choir and the concert choir are combined. The two groups have given the Durham community enriching and uplifting performances for many years. The combined choirs can be heard this year at the Honors Convocation at 11:00 Friday, Aprils; the Spring Concert at 4:00, April 24, in the B.N. Duke Auditorium; and at the graduation ceremonies. NCCU’s faculty, staff and students are welcomed to ex perience the hard work and dedication of the concert and . touring choirs a. all of their NCCU Tounng Choir performances.
