Physical Therapy Department
About 70 students from iiear-by
colleges attended the Physical Tlier-
apy Oi)en House ou May 21. It was
a pleasure, too, to welcome so many
interested members of the University
Coiuimmity.
We are pleased to announce two
new appointments to the Physical
Therapj’ Staff, Mrs. Xancy Kedding
and John Riebel. Mrs. Reddinjj, a
fjraduate of Skidmore College and the
IT. S. Army Traininjr Prorram in
Physical Therapy, was formerly as
sociated with Rex and James Walker
Memorial Hospitals and will serve as
a student supervisor in the Physical
Therapy Clinic. Mr. Riebel, a gradu
ate of North Central College and the
Duke Phj'sical Therapy Course, is a
former member of the Duke Physical
Therapy Staff. He served as acting
director of the Physical Therapy
Course in 1!)46. After receiving his
B.D. degree from Yale University in
1949, Mr. Riebel has been engaged in
Y.M.C.A. administrative and student
counselling activities. For the past
six years he has been Associate Direc
tor of the Y.I\r.(lA. at the University
of North Carolina. Mr. Riebel will
serve as student counsellor and co-or
dinator of education to the Physical
Therapy Program.
John’s first assignment was to cover
the Institute on the “Correlation of
Physics and Physiology in the Teach
ing of Eleetrothcrapentic and Testing
Pi’ocedures” sponsored by the Office
of Vocational Rehabilitation and the
American Physical Therapy Associa
tion at the University of Oklahoma.
Helen Kaiser has been busy with
committee meetings—as a member of
the planning committee of the above
Institute and as a member of the
American Physical Therapy Associa
tion Advisory Committee on Educa
tion which recently met in Wash
ington, I). C. Another trip was to
Asheville to speak to the Southern
District Meeting of the Association
for Health, Physical Education, and
Reci’eation on “Methods Used to De
velop Muscular Strength.”
Mrs. Martha Brewer was our repre
sentative to an Institute on “Prej)a-
ration for Child Birth” held recently
in Jackson, Miss.
Mrs. Polytinii Pateli from Athens,
Greece, an International Coopera
tion Administration fellowship stu
dent, is s])ending several months visit
ing the Physical Therapy Department.
Mrs. Pateli is assistant to Maria
Magalou, Duke P.T. ’53, Director of
Physical Therapy at the Rehabilita
tion Center in Athens.
Bacteriology
Mr. Pierre Doujjagne of the Bel
gian (!ongo is si)ending three weeks
studying under Dr. N. F. Conant in
the Mycology I^ab.
R\iby McCracken and Duffj' Moore,
second year medical student, were
married Feb. 22 and they reside at

Business Office
The Hos])ital Business Office is
looking forward to scmie extensive
renovation and expansion when tlie
OPD moves into the new building
this sumuu'r. By fall we hope to have
enough room to spread out a bit.
We are hap])y to welcome into our
office Mrs. Bonnie Kyles and Jliss
Patsy Yarborough. Both are busy
learning to operate otir new account
ing machines. Patsy and Bonnie
claim that these machines will do al
most anything if you punch the right
button.
The Yankees have invaded the
South, 1957 style. In this case a
Yankee is carrying Pat Kurtz off to
Boston. Best wishes to Pat and Paul
Jiulge who are to marry in the fall.
Nancy Balltzglier presented her
husband, Harold, with a new little
Balltzglier in March and is now back
at work in the Programs Office.
Ciiuly Lou is the newest addition’s
name.
With hot weather here the beach
has again become the favorite si>ot for
week-end travelers. Joan Anderson,
Nancy King, Pat Kurtz, and Carol
Smith recently decorated the sand
dunes of the North Carolina coast.

Post Office
Mrs. Rachel Piabinec and husband
Paul are the proud ])arents of a new
son, who was born May Ki. They also
have another son Pauly, three years
old. Mrs. liabinec is being replaced
during her leave of absence by Mrs.
Faith Gallegas.
Mrs. Josephine Marchant spent
May 24 and 25 in Greensboro visiting
friends and relatives.

We welcome back to the service Dr.
W. L. Thomas who is now in full
swing after convalescing at home;
also a welcome to Dr. Bayard Carter,
back from Europe.
It is with regret that Dr. Yancey
G. Culton, Jr., has to leave us for the
time being to aid Uncle Sam in the
Air Force somewhere in Texas ....
we wish him luck.
Dr. Alfred Linkletter has returned
to Boston Lying-In Hosi)ital after
spending the month of May observing
and helping around in the clinic and
ward. We welcome back Dr. Edward
B. Mabry who replaced Dr. Linkletter
in Boston for the month of May.
Dr. Charles Flynn is back after a
restful vacation and will be ready to
go again if the beautiful weather con
tinues.
Dr. J. B. Williams is l>ack from
Boca Grande, Fla. after three months’
practice there, and he was glad to be
back in the old routine; we missed
him also while away.
Congratulations to Drs. Violet and
Larry Turner on a beautiful daugh

Biochemistry
May has been a lively month here in
biochemistry. A ])icnic was ])lanned
on May the 11th, but was accom
panied by rain. Nevertheless, the
whole crowd filed into a camj) mess
hall at Umstead State Park .... amid
