Four Administrators Promoted
Four hospital administrators have been
promoted to newly created positions in
the director's office. All had assumed
their duties by Feb. I.
C. Edward McCauley, assistant direc
tor since 1967, is now associate director.
George H. Mack and Howard R. Veit,
both formerly administrative associates,
and S. Douglas Smith, formerly adminis
trative assistant to the dean of the School
of Medicine, have become assistant direc
tors.
Announcement of the new appoint
ments was made by Dr. Stuart M. Ses-
soms, director of the hospital.
Mr. McCauley, originally of Charlottes
ville, Va., received his B. S. degree from
North Carolina State University in 1956.
He had previously attended Mars Hill
Junior College.
After earning a physical therapy certi
ficate at Duke, Mr. McCauley was granted
a master's degree in hospital administra
tion from the Medical College of Virginia
in 1963.
Prior to his appointment at Duke in
1967, Mr. McCauley served as assistant
director of the Division of Association
Services of the American Hospital Asso
ciation. He was also formerly assistant
National Academy of Sciences
Elects Dr. Handler President
Dr. Philip Handler, James B. Duke
Professor and chairman of the Depart
ment of Biochemistry, was declared presi
dent-elect of the National Academy of
Sciences Jan. 17. Dr. Handler, 51, will
begin a six-year term as the eighteenth
president of the academy July I.
He succeeds Dr. Frederick Seitz, presi
dent of the academy since 1962, who will
devote fulltime to his position as presi
dent of the Rockefeller University after
Dr. Handler takes office.
Dr. Handler, at Duke since 1939, has
been active in enzyme research and has-
participated in national scientific affairs.
He has been a member of the National
Science Board since 1962 and its chairman
since 1966. From 1964 to 1968 he was a
member of the President's Science Advi
sory Committee.

Mr. Mack, who had been administra
tive associate since July of 1968, is a
graduate of the University of Michigan
with an A. B. degree in history. He
studied business administration at Wayne
State University and then earned a mas
ter's degree in hospital administration
at Duke in 1967.
He was an administrative assistant at
the medical center from 1967 to 1968.
Mr. Smith, who has been administra
tive assistant to Dean William G. Aniyan
since June of 1966, received a B. S. degree
in business from Abilene Christian Col
lege in Texas in I960. He has also gra-
