13 Children Far Away from Home Huong Six-year-old Pham Thi Huong leaves the hospital to live with her foster family, Mr. and Mrs. G. Scott Herman-Giddens and their three children in Chapel Hill for the next few months. Huong was one of the.two children brought to the United States for treatment of war-related injuries by the Durham- Chapel Hill chapter of the Committee of Responsibility for War-Injured and War-Burned Vietnamese Children. Huong, whose father is a farmer in Vietnam, was injured by misdirected rifle bullets on January 10. She suffered a frac tured thigh complicated by osteomyelitis, an infection of the bone. jr. • Mrs. Herman-Giddens and daughter Melantha get acquainted with Huong soon after she arrived. Also staying with the Herman-Giddens is Miss Bui Thi Ngoc Nga, a Vietnamese social worker and interpreter. Huong is presently undergoing outpatient treatment at Duke several times a week. While the children are patients at Duke, physicians and surgeons are donating their time free. Long Ngo Long, a vivacious ten-year-old, heads for home with Dr. M. Henderson Rourk, his wife and their three children on Cole Mill Road. Long will stay with the Rourks while he continues to receive outpatient treatment for his injury. He was hospitalized for surgery to correct a malunited fracture of the right thigh and accompanying nerve injury and is presently in a large body cast. Long received his injury when he was hit by an artillery shell at his home in Vietnam nearly six months ago. His father is a soldier in the Vietnamese Army. Long gets acquainted with the Rourks and his new toy guitar. After he and Huong complete their course of follow-up treatments at Duke, they will be returned to their families in Vietnam. If you are interested in the work of the committee that brought these children to the U. S. for treatment, please contact Miss Sally Underhill at extension 5732.
