'professional news people on the move Gets AMA Award Dr. Philip Handler, new ly elected president of the National Academy of Sci ences, has been named re cipient of the American Medical Association's 1969 Scientific Achievement A- ward. Dr. Handler, former chairman of the Depart ment of Biochemistry-Ge- netics at Duke, was pre sented the award at the A. M. A.'s annual conven tion in New York City in July. Guest Lecturer Dr. Barnes Woodhall, professor of neurosurgery and chancellor pro tern of the University, serves as honorary lec turer at the Congress of World Neurology September 22 in New York City. Chairman Dr. W. K. Joklik, chairman of the Duke Department of Microbiology-lmmu- nology, served as chairman of the Reo- virus Session at the Gordon Conference on Animal Cells and Viruses in Seattle, Wash., July 28-August 1. Gives Papers Dr. Jacquelyne Johnson Jackson, assis tant professor of medical sociology, pre sented a paper on "Urban Negro Kinship Relations" at the American Sociological Association meeting in San Francisco September 1-5. Dr. Jackson also presented a talk on "Changing Kinship Roles and Patterns Among the Aged in a Black Community at the American Psychological Associa tion meeting in Washington during the first week of September. In addition. Dr. Jackson spoke on "Kinship Relations Among Older Negro Americans" at the International Congress of Gerontology in Washington August 25. Makes Talks Dr. John P. Tindall, assistant professor of dermatology, gave a talk on "The Value of Microscopic Diagnosis of Tissues in Sporotrichosis" at the Second World Congress of the International Society of Tropical Dermatology in Kyoto, Japan, August 15-20. Dr. Tindall also co-authored a paper with Dr. Steven Romeo on "Intra-Arterial Reserpine Treatment in Patients with Raynaud's Disease or Raynaud's Pheno menon" at the American Medical Associa tion's meeting in New York in July. In addition, he attended the meeting of the Society for Investigative Derma tology in Atlantic City, N. J., July 12-13. Gives Talk Dr. Seigfried Heyden, associate pro fessor of community health sciences, gave a talk on "Physiological Measure ments in the Prognosis of Deaths — A Seven Year Incidence Study in Evans County, Georgia" at the International Gerontology Conference in Washington August 28. Attends Meetings Dr. Marcel Kinsbourne, associate pro fessor of pediatrics and neurology, served as convener of a symposium on visual masking at the XIX International Con gress of Psychology in London July 27- August 2. Dr. Kinsbourne was also speaker at a symposium about attention and perfor mance at "Hydepark", Driebergen, Neth erlands, August 4-9. In addition, he gave a talk at the Amer ican Psychological Association's meeting in Washington August 31-September 4. Presents Paper Dr. Ewald W. Busse, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, presented a paper on "Psychophysiological Reactions and Psychoneurotic Disorders Related to Physical Changes in the Elderly" at the Eighth International Congress of Geron tology in Washington August 24-29. Attends School Miss Linda Charnes, an instructor at the Duke School of Nursing, was one of 31 nursing educators from this country, Puerto Rico and Canada to attend a two- week short course on the dynamics of nursing education. The course was spon sored by the University of Colorado School of Nursing in Denver. The same teachers will return next June for a follow-up conference on in terim projects. Named Fellow Dr. Robert O. Friedel, Virginia Ware Gibbons Scholar and third-year resident in psychiatry at the Medical Center, has selected as a Falk Resident Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association. Part of his appointment to the fellow ship will include participation in national A. P. A. activities. Gives Talk Dr. Robert H. Peter of the division of cardiology presented a talk on "Cardiac Arrest and Resuscitation" in Spartanburg, S. C., July 26. Attends Session Dr. Saul Boyarsky, professor of urolo gy, attended a meeting of the American Congress of Rehabilitation in Chicago August 11-14. Gives Paper Dr. Eric Pfeiffer, assistant professor of psychiatry, presented a paper on "Short term vs. Long-term Survival in Old Age: Psychological and Social Correlates into Polar Groups" in Washington August 24- 29.
