In 1967 he received a certificate in the three-year general program from the Insurance Institute of America. A 1959 graduate of Durham High School, he graduated from the Charles H. Babcock School of Business Administra tion at Wake Forert University in 1963. JAMES G. CARTER Responsible for the obstetrics and gynecology wards and the newborn and intensive care nurseries. Carter, who commutes from his home in Raleigh, has a business and finance background and holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Morris Harvey College in Charleston, W. Va. For two years before coming to Duke, Carter was director of King's Business College in Raleigh and prior to that he was district manager for Beneficial Man agement Corp. From 1959-63 he was assistant vice president of the First Union National Bank in Charlotte. Carter and his wife and son live at 3706 Cason St., Raleigh, JIM DANIEL Responsible for pediatrics wards, How land and Matas. When Duke's new emergency clinic opened in 1967, Daniel joined the staff as an emergency room coordinator. He was serving as collection officer this year when he was promoted into one of the unit administration posts. Daniel is a graduate of the G. C. Hawley High School in Creedmoor. For two years before coming to Duke, he was assistant manager at Beneficial Finance Co. offices In Newark, N. J., and Ports mouth, Va. Prior to that he was em ployed as an agent for N. C. Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Durham. Daniel and his wife, the former Beulah Daye of Durham, have two children. RUSS GULLIXSON Responsible for the special medical unit including the Cardiac Care Unit, cardiology and Cabell ward. Gullixson came to Duke this fall after 27 years of active service with the Army. He retired in March as a colonel. He holds a number of military decor ations including the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals with V devices for Valor, two Purple Heart Medals, and Joint Service Commendation Medal for Service with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Army Commendation Medal. Gullixson is a native of Idaho and his wife, Esther, was born near Wilson, N. C. They are living at Sims until their home in Durham is ready., JOHN KERNODLE Responsible for surgical wards Nott, Strudwick, Welch, Holmes and the In tensive Nursing Unit. The only Duke graduate in the unit administration program, Kernodle attend ed public schools in Durham and received a bachelor's degree in business adminis tration at Duke. He was employed in the insurance in dustry for 18 years before joining the Medical Center staff. Kernodle and his wife, Betty, who is director of the Medical Record Depart ment here, have a teenage son and live at 2921 Welcome Drive. Faculty (continued from page six) named assistant professor of medical so ciology in the Department of Psychiatry. She is also assistant professor of soci ology. Dr. Brehm earned her B. A. degree in psychology from the University of Minne sota and her M. A. and Ph. D. degrees, also in psychology, from the University of North Carolina in 1965 and 1966, re spectively. Named assistant professor of pharma cology was Dr. Elias Meezan, a native of Brooklyn, N. Y. He comes to Duke from a postdoctoral fellowship at the Cali fornia Institute of Technology. Dr. Meezan is a graduate in chemistry from the City College of New York and earned his Ph. D. degree in biochemistry at Duke in 1966. Formerly an assistant professor at the . University of San Francisco School of Nursing, Dr. Helen Frances Bigler has been appointed assistant professor in the Duke School of Nursing. She received her diploma from the St. Mary Hospital School of Nursing in Walla Walla, Wash., and her B. S. and M. N. de grees from the University of Washington. She earned her doctorate in nursing science from Boston University School of Nursing in 1968. Dr. Charles B. Hammond, a former associate in the department, has been named assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Hammond is a na tive of Kansas. He attended the Citadel from 1954 to 1957 and received his B. S. and M. D. de grees from Duke. Formerly an associate in the division of plastic and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Lawrence K, Thompson, III, has been named assistant professor. Dr. Thompson received his B. S. and M. D. degrees from Duke in 1956, and 1961, respectively. He has been chief of plastic surgery at the Durham Veterans Administration Hospital. William W. Lowrance, newly appoint ed director of the Hospital Division of the Regional Medical Program, has been named adjunct assistant professor of hos pital administration. Lowrance earned his undergraduate degree at Davidson College and his mast er's in hospital administration from Duke in 1941. He was formerly administrator at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, N. C.
