PROFESSIONAL NEWS (continued from page two) Give Symposium Four Medical Center staff members presented a symposium on "Speech Prob lems Associated with Orofacial Anoma lies" October 30. Giving presentations were Dr. Raymond Massengill, Jr., Dr. Kenneth Pickrell, Dr. Galen Quinn, and Dr. Nicholas Georgiade. In New York Dr. Peregrina Labay of the division of urology gave a talk on "Spinal Cord Injury" in New York September 11. At Nursing Conferences Mrs. Margaret Dunn, head nurse on Welch ward, attended the American Nur ses Association meeting in Atlanta earlier this month. Miss Carol Jones, R. N. on Welch, attended the N. C. Nurses Association convention in Raleigh. Give Papers Presenting papers at the American Heart Association meetings in Dallas No vember 12-16 were Dr. Yihong Kong who spoke on "Assessment of Regional Myo cardial Performance in Left Ventricular Dysfunction," Dr. Robert H. Peter whose presentation was titled "Experimental Right Ventricular Infarction," and Dr. Victor S. Behar who talked on "Effects of Contrast on Ventricular Function." Drs. Henry McIntosh and Robert Wha len served on the Scientific Sessions Program Committee for the meeting. Named Fellow Dr. Raymond Massengill, Jr., director of medical speech pathology, has been elected to fellowship in the American Speech and Hearing Association. Dr. Massengill received the honor at the group's annual convention in Chicago in November. In addition. Dr. Massengill presented papers on swallowing and speech produc tion in patients who have had their tongues removed due to cancer and on new and improved surgical techniques in cleft palate treatment. He was also elected to the association's Clinical Certification Committee at the convention. Gave Courses Mr. G. S. T. Cavanagh, director of the Medical Center Library, and Mr. Warren Bird, associate director, taught courses in systems analysis and materials for the history of medicine for the Continuing Education program of the Medical Library Association at its annual meeting in Louisville, Ky., during the last week in October. Also attending the meeting were Mary Ann Brown, Kathy Kruse, Eula Wheeler, and Judy Woodburn. At Institute Karen Hardy, R. N., Frances Jones, R. N., and Kae Robertson, R. N., at tended the regional institute of the Asso ciation of Operating Room Nurses in Norfolk, Va., October 25-26. Listed Miss Helen Kaiser, professor of physi cal therapy and consultant in physical therapy with the N. C. Regional Medical Program, is listed in the latest Who's Who Among American Women. She was recently appointed public member to the North Carolina Committee on Patient Care. In October, Miss Kaiser traveled to Memphis, Tenn., to attend a Regional Medical Allied Health Personnel meeting. Participant Dr. James F. Glenn, professor and chief of the division of urology, served on a panel discussing "Reconseration of Carcinoma of the Prostate" at the ACS Clinical Congress in San Francisco Octo ber 6-10. Dr. Glenn served on a panel on "Adre nal Tumors" at the Pan Pacific Surgical Association Congress in Honolulu Octo ber 14-22. He attended the NAS-NRC Clinical Congress in Chicago October 24-25 and gave a paper on "Adrenal Causes of Hypertension" at the American Urology Association postgraduate seminar Novem ber 1-4 in Chicago. Panelist Dr. Robert H. Peter of the division of cardiology served as a panelist at a sym posium on coronary circulation in Syra cuse, N. Y., October 16-21. Dr. Peter also participated in a work shop on coronary care in Salt Lake City, October 21-24. At Workshop Flora Smith, head nurse on Halsted, attended a nursing service organization workshop October 3-4 at Ohio State University. While there, she visited one of that medical center's thoracic surgery wards. At Tri-State Meeting Several members of the physical the rapy staff attended the three-day Tri- State Physical Therapy Association meet ing in Winston-Salem October 31-Novem ber 2. Mrs. Jean Barr and Miss Helen Kaiser participated in the N. C. Physical Therapy Association Executive Committee meet ing while they were there. Miss Patricia McFadden, a senior PT student, presented a paper on "Motor Deficit Evaluation of the Patient with Myotonic Psytcophy." Guest Faculty Dr. James J. Morris, assistant professor in the division of cardiology, was a mem ber of the guest faculty at the Marquette School of Medicine in Milwaukee October 20-22. The program, presented by the American College of Cardiology, was titled "An Aggressive Approach to Coro nary Heart Disease: The Present State of the Art." Dr. Morris also attended a meeting of the teaching scholars of the American Heart Association in New York October 3. At Meetings Dr. John P. Tindall, assistant professor of dermatology, will attend the American Academy of Dermatology meeting in Miami December 6-11. Dr. Tindall attended the Southern Medical Association meeting November 10-13 in Atlanta. At Meeting Miss Helen Kaiser and Dr. Miriam Jacobs of physical therapy attended the second annual meeting of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions in Washington November 20-22. Dr. Jacobs attended the Council of Physical Therapy School Directors meet ing and educational institute at the Center for Adult Education November 16-19.
