(photo by Dave Hooks) 18 X-Ray Technologists Graduate Eighteen men and women recently completed Duke's two-year program in radiologic technology with a commence ment exercise in the Hospital amphi theater. John B. Cahoon, Jr., director of the School of Radiologic Technology at the Medical Center, presided during the graduation and also presented the Mallinckrodt Award to Ronald Lee Cromartie of Parkton, N.C., for demon strating the highest degree of skill and professionalism in his class. The Rev. Will Spong. a chaplain at the Medical Center and instructor in the Duke Divinity School, gave the commencement address which was followed by a response presented by John H. Dawson of Jacksonville, N.C., presi dent of the class. Giving welcoming speeches were Dr. George J. Baylin, professor of radiology. Dr. William F. Barry, Jr., associate pro fessor of radiology. Dr. Boyd T. Worde, associate professor of radiology, and James A. Miller, chief radiologic tech nologist. Dr. Richard G. Lester, professor and chairman of the Department of Radio logy, presented diplomas to the graduates and Miss Bobbie Holtzman, assistant di rector of the school, gave each student his Duke pin. Graduates in addition to Mr. Cromartie and Mr. Dawson include Miss Linda Evon Barrett, Miss Frances Irene Brown, Miss Eva Viola Harris, Mrs. Janice Copeland Harris, Miss Jacqueline Nash Russell, Mrs. Linda Blackwood Stephenson, and Mrs. Geraldine Kinsey Young, all of Durham, Miss Nancy Kathryn Brown of Lillington, N.C., Miss Carolyn Lounette Cates of Hillsborough, N.C., Miss Martha Jane Dove of Hope Mills, N.C., Decatur Lewis Fuller of McLeansville, N.C., Miss Joyce Gail Strickland of Clinton, N.C., Miss Gayle Kimball Sutton of LaGrange, N.C., Miss Janice Carolyn Thomas of Fayetteville, N.C., Miss Sharon Elizabeth Wicker of Sanford, N.C., and Miss Susan Ellen Willenbrock of Aiken, S.C. Eight of the graduates have joined the Duke technical staff. Dr. Delford L. Stickel, an associate professor of surgery at Duke, has been named chief of staff at the Durham Vete rans Administration Hospital. The appointment was announced late last month by William B. Sheppard, direc tor of the VA. In his new assignment. Dr. Stickel is responsible for coordination of patient care, teaching, training, and research at the 489-bed hospital. He was formerly chief of the surgical service there. Dr. Stickel replaces Dr. Rayrrrand W. Postlethwait, who resigned September I to become director of the Sea Level division of the Medical Center. Dr. Postlethwait now has administrative responsibility for all Duke's holdings in.coastal Carteret County, including the 90-bed Sea Level Hospital given to Duke last year. Dr. Stickel, a native of West Virginia, is a 1949 graduate of Duke with an A.B. degree in chemistry. He received his M.D. from the Duke School of Medicine in 1953 and stayed at Duke for his inter ship. Following active duty with the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957, Dr. Stickel re turned to Duke for a residency in general and thoracic surgery. He was appointed assistant professor of surgery in 1962 and promoted to associate professor in 1966. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the Board of Tho racic Surgery and has published many ar ticles in scientific and professional journals. His major field of interest is or gan transplantation. DR.
