Professional News Presents Paper Dr. Everett H. Ellinwood Jr., associate professor of psychiatry, presented a paper at a meeting of the American Psychopathological Association held in New York City Mar. 3-4. It was entitled "Chronic Amphetamine I n toxicatipn: Behavioral Model of Psychoses." At Meetings The division of orthopaedic surgery has been busy attending meetings in Washington, D.C. recently. At the annual meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, Dr. J. Leonard Goldner, chief of the division, attended as a member of the executive council. Dr. Frank Clippinger, professor of orthopaedics, served as chairman of the committee on residency training. Dr. Blaine Nashold, associate professor of neurosurgery was an invited guest and gave the Founders Lecture. Drs. Nashold and Goldner also gave a panel presentation on the management j)f complicated pain problems. At the Orthopaedic Research Society meeting held the next day. Dr. James Urbaniak, assistant professor In the division, gave a paper on blood supply of tendons after the use of silicone rods for formation erf pseudotendon sheaths. Also attending were associate professors Drs. Frank Bassett and Donald McCollum. Drs. Clippinger and Urbaniak also attended the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. At this convention. Dr. Bassett gave a paper on "Mechanism of Knee Injuries," while Drs. Goldner and Nashold gave a combined presentation on pain problems. House staff members who attended the three meetings include Drs. Hiroshi Eguro, William Bailey, Richard Hooper and Charles Niemeyer. Speaker Dr. Merrill Elias, assistant professor of psychiatry, gave two talks at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine last month. The first one, entitled "Applications of Multivariate Analyses to Repeated Measurement Designs," was addressed to the behavioural group. Dr. Elias then spoke on "Memory and Learning in Bailey's Recombinant Inbred Strains" to the entire laboratory staff. At Conference John C. Detwiler, chaplain supervisor, attended a national conference on "Resourcing Families" sponsored by the United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Ind. Feb. 18-21. Chaplain Detwiler was one of 35 representatives from theological schools, churches and health care facilities invited to attend the conference. Provost Names 4 Appointments At Med Center Four new faculty appointments have been announced at the Medical Center by Dr. Frederic N. Cleaveland, provost of the University. Three of the academic changes came in the Departments of Medicine and Pathology, while the fourth was a double appointment in environmental medicine and biochemistry. Appointed to assistant professorships in the Department of Medicine were Dr. Peter F. Pepe and Dr. Harold C. Strauss. Dr. Pepe comes to Duke from Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Tex., where he was chief of the internal medicine section and rheumatology. He received both his medical education and postdoctoral training at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Strauss earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Following postgraduate work at hospitals in Montreal and New York, he was appointed associate in pharmacology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1971. Named assistant professor in the Department of Pathology was Dr. Darell D. Signer. A graduate of the Duke School of Medicine in 1965, he remained at Duke Hospital for his internship and residency in medical neurology. He received his doctorate in immunology in November of 1971. Dr. Joe M. McCord was appointed an associate in both experimental medicine and biochemistry. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry at Duke in 1970 and was a postdoctoral fellow in the department before joining the staff. Dr. Cleaveland also announced five appointments to the clinical faculty in the division of orthopaedics in the Department of Surgery. They are Dr. Robert E. Musgrave and Dr. Frank H. Stelling, assistant clinical professors, and Drs. Delos W. Boyer, Leslie C. Meyer, and Ronald A. Pruitt, clinical associates.
