Professional 69 Participating In Nursing Program News Present Paper Dr. Nicholas G. Georgiade, professor of plastic and maxillofacial surgery, and Dr. Joseph Steele, a resident In that service, presented a paper at the combined German and American Maxillofacial Society meeting in West Berlin May 27. The paper dealt with unusual malignancies of the head and neck that have been seen at Duke and the VA hospitals since 1955. Elected Fred Sanfilippo, rising junior medical student, was elected a member of the board of trustees of the Student American Medical Association at the group's annual meeting in Los Angeles, Calif., last month. Author Dr. Wayne Rundles, professor and chief of hematology. Is co-author of a recently published book entitled "Hennatology." Dr. Rundles was also visiting professor of oncology at the University of Callforniai Medical Center this spring. President Dr. Charles E. Llewellyn, associate professor of psychiatry, took office as president of the No rth Carolina Neurop>sychiatric Association at the group's business meeting In Pinehuret on May 20. Speaker Dr. Daniel C. Tosteson, professor and chairman of physiology and pharmacology, delivered a talk at the U.S.-Japan Seminar on Organization of Energy Transducing Membranes held In Tokyo May 22-26. Dr. Tosteson was also named president-elect of the American Physiological Society. Sixty-nine student nurses representing 17 different colleges and universities are spending their summer at the Medical Center under Duke's Professional Nurse Assistant Program. In its third year, the program offers students the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience while earning money. It also shows the prospective graduate the nursing opportunities available at Duke Hospital. The students are all rising seniors in bachelor degree programs. Forty of them are from Duke. One group of nurses arrived May 16 for the 10-week summer employment program. The second group will begin June 5. Following a two-week orientation period, the students will work under the direction of the nursing staff to apply current knowledge and skills in patient care and to develop new skills. Deryl Hart was inducted into the Society of Scholars at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore on May 26. Membership is bestowed upon former postdoctoral fellows at Johns Hopkins who have gained marked distinction in their fields of academic or professional interest. Dr. Hart, a graduate of Emory University, received his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins, where he also served his internship and did postdoctoral study in surgery and pathology. After serving on the Hopkins faculty until 1930, he became professor of surgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery at Duke.
