VOLUME 19, NUMBER 45 November 17, 1972 DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA 7 Awards Scheduled Two Full Days’ Activities At Tonight’s Dinner The presentation of seven awards and the induction of an honorary alumnus will highlight tonight's banquet of the Duke Medical Alumni Association at the Durham Hotel. For the first time, a Distinguished Service in Health Award will be presented. The recipient will be Miss Grizzelle Mitchell (Dell) Norfleet, who was among those primarily responsible for establishment of the N.C. Cerebral Palsy Hospital in Durham. In fact, Miss Norfleet, who now lives in retirement in Winston-Salem, operated a cerebral palsy treatment unit in Durham that was a forerunner of the present hospital, and a number of Duke physicians helped her with her patients. The Honorary Alumrius Award will go to John Alexander McMahon, who became president of the American Hospital Association Nov. 1. Since 1968 he had been president of N.C. Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Inc., and he is chairman of the Duke University Board of Trustees. Distinguished Alumni Awards will go to the following: --Dr. Cyrus C. Erickson, professor of pathology at the University of Tennessee and a member of the Duke medical faculty from 1937-50. -Dr. W. Proctor Harvey (M.D. Duke '43), professor of medicine at Georgetown University and director of the Division of Cardiology at Georgetown University Hospital. -Dr. Henry D. McIntosh, chairman of the Department of Medicine at Baylor University, and a member of the Duke medical faculty from 1954-70. -Dr. Marc J. Musser, chief medical director of the Veterans Administration Central Office in Washington and a Duke medical faculty member from 1966-70. 8th Annual Reunion Starts Today The medical center's physician count will increase by about 125 today and tomorrow when Duke medical graduates and former house staff members return for the eighth annual Duke Medical Alumni Weekend. In addition to the formal program, a ’\ MEMORIAL SERVICE—As part of the Duke Medical Alumni Weekend, a memorial service for Dr. Wilburt C. Davison will be conducted this afternoon at 4:45 in Duke Chapel. Dr. Davison, dean of medicine from 1927-60, died June 26. --Dr. Charles C. Richardson (M.D. Duke '60), professor of biological chemistry at Harvard. -Dr. John Victor Verner Jr. (M.D. Duke '54), in private practice of internal medicine at Watson Clinic in Lakeland, Fla. number of special events also are scheduled, including a memorial service for Dr. W. C. Davison, a special program for women, an exhibition of prints and art objects on medical themes and the conferring of several special honors at tonight's banquet. Alumni began arriving yesterday and attended the Director's Hour lecture by Dr. Philip Handler, president of the National Academy of Sciences, and a reception last night at the home of Dr. William G. Aniyan, vice president for health affairs. Today's scientific programs begin in the Hospital Amphitheater at 9:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Dr. David T. Smith, James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Microbiology, presides at the morning session and Dr. F. Bayard Carter, professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology, chairs the afternoon sessions. At 10:30 a.m. in Room 3031, Dean Ruby Wilson of the School of Nursing will meet with women guests at the meeting to discuss educational opportunities at the medical center. The alumni luncheon meeting will begin at 12:30 in the Union Ballroom. At 4:45 in Duke Chapel a special memorial service is scheduled for Dr. Davison, dean of the School of Medicine from 1927-60, who died June 26. Those speaking at the service will be Dr. Aniyan, Mrs. James H. Semans, the Rev. James T. Cleland, dean of Duke Chapel, Dr. Jay Arena, secretary-treasurer of the alumni association, and Dr. John P. McGovern of Houston, Texas. Tomorrow morning alumni will be invited to "drop-in" teaching rounds at (Continued on page 3)
