AGCommodations Made for Little Guests (From a report by Beverly Craig, Reporter. Full-term Nursery.) When you need more space and you can't build on, you knock down a couple of walls, add a few cabinets and rearrange the space you have for more efficient use. That's what they have done in the FuU-term Nursery. "The renovation is an attempt to improve patient care by better utilization of existing space," Dr. Roberta Smith, unit physician, said. Two walls have come down so that space previously taken up by two small, inefficient rooms can be incorporated into two larger rooms. Smaller Babies This has increased the nursery's capacity for transitional babies. One of the rooms is for growing, premature babies, allowing them to be kept separate from the newborn babies. The other eiUarged room has been equipped for smaller new babies than the nursery has previously been able to handle. WORKING FOR THE SAS/fS—Construction recently completed In the Full-term Nursery will mean improved patient care by better use of existing space. Editor Mrs. Ina Fried Public Relations Assistant John Becton The nursing staff, meanwhile, is receiving further training to increase their sl^ls in the care of smaller babies. "We are not, however, in any way, going to become a mini-ICN," Dr. Smith stressed. More Efficient Storage A supply room has been remodeled for more efficient storage, and for use of a central supply cart which will mean fewer supplies will have to be kept on hand. While there will be more patient care space, the nursery's bed number will be the same. Dr. Smith said. "But bed count is deceptive," she continued. "No matter how many beds we have, we have to take all the babies bom on Carter Suite." Also added were lockers for the nurses, something they have previously done without. Completing The Project While the construction was going on, the nursery compacted itself into two of the four patient care units and one of the rooms on Williams Ward, which surrounds the nursery. Now these rooms are getting some attention, too. Besides being repainted, they are getting a new floor and new drapes. Also, a warmer is being installed in the examining room.
