THE CHAMPION RETIRES—Howland staff honored Etta Tart with a surprise party in the am bulatory dining room last Friday. She is retiring from the Howland nursery where since 1958 she's been like a second mother to those babies," according to Diane Burke, her supervisor. A special party cake was inscribed "Etta Tart, champion of the babies." (Photo by John Becton) Ring in the New Phone Books Office of Public Relations P.O. Orientation for Duke North "Another major focus on Ann Britt's work very soon," Peck said, "will be developing training and orientation programs for Duke North, so that employees will be totally familiar with the new facility and the new systems and equipment we'll have there." Peck noted that the work of the Department of Human Resources Development will be companion to, but will not overlap or conflict with, that performed by the Paths for Employee Progress (PEP) program, which is medical center-wide. PEP is for personnel who want to enroll in formal classes and work toward a specific certificate or degree, whereas the new training program. Peck explained, "is designed for people who are not going to spend a great deal of time in formal classroom activities, and are not going for a degree, but who want to improve their job skills or develop other talents. Joint Effort The program will be associated with the Continuing Education Division of Durham Technical Institute (DTI), which is part of the N.C. Department of Community Colleges. "These classes can be selected from the current course offerings of DTI, or specifically developed and tailored to meet the needs of Duke Hospital employee groups," Peck said. "We will be working closely with Dr. John Crumpton, DTI president, and his staff in selecting instructors and developing course offerings when we have decided on the needs and desires of our employees," he added. Peck termed the plan "a unique one, because no other single institution is working with the Department of Community Colleges in a joint effort to develop resource opportunities to the degree we plan to. "And we're particularly pleased/' he added, "that Ann Britt, who is so familiar with the community college system, agreed to join us and head up development of the program." Project Director (Continued from page 1) adult and community college education administration from N.C. State University, was deep into finding out what her new job is all about. (See related story on the new department.) The new hospital training program will tie in with the N.C. Department of Community Colleges, where Britt was coordinator for Hospitality Education Programs. "The hospitality industry," she explained, "includes institutions health departments, public schools, hotels, motels, restaurants, day-care centers, rest homes and related agencies that serve the needs of individuals as they travel, study, work or temporarily live away from home. "Duke Hospital is obviously part of the hospitality industry," she added. Meeting Educational Needs Her job was determining the educational needs of the industry and then planning and implementing programs to meet those needs through local community colleges and the state-wide department. A native of Colerain (Bertie County), the former Ann Rhea earned a B.S. in business education, majoring in accounting, at East Carolina University in 1%5 and a master's there in guidance counseling in 1970. Her doctorate from N.C. State was awarded last year. Before joining the Department of Community Colleges in 1975, Britt was a graduate assistant for a year with the Southern Regional Education Board and worked at the College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City for seven years, in the Manpower Development Training Act program and later as director of Off-Campus Adult Education. She has two children, Franklin, almost 15, and Martha, 10. • ■ a 4 S C 7 10 n 12 U 14 IS 16 17 U » » 2] 2 S 24 2S 2S 77 21 February 11-18,1977 We would like to list lectures, symposia and other activities at the medical center in the Intercom Calendar.
