As an administration sp>okesman explained: "People with afternoon appointments here don't have time to prepwre supper, so it will be a real convenience to provide them with the opportunity to pick up a bucket of the colonel’s on the way home." Operated as part of the Parking Valet service, it will be known as Chick-Valet and will offer drive-up service or carry-out to the garage. Meanwhile, Duke isn't starting from scratch in the chicken business. Appropriate fowl quarters already available in the Bell Building (photo below) made it unnecessary to build a new wing or take over shell space elsewhere. A committee appointed to oversee the operation consists of Warren Bird, Richard Fry, Bennie (no relation to Hennie) Penny, Florence Featherston, Steve Cockerill, Sheila Peacock and Marshall Fowler. Chairman is Richard Peck. (Photos by Harlan Sanders) Researcher Will Sink Teeth into Diver Stress Factors Innercalm Said Sold to Playboy Playboy Enterprises, Chicago, has offered to buy Innercalm, according to a statement released yesterday. Alice, a spokesperson for the publishing syndicate, said that their interest in adding the medical center weekly to their group of journals was part of an overall effort to expand readership. “We think that the medical field is a natural area for us to move into, given our long-standing interest in anatomy," she said. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the medical center said he could not confirm the report that there had been any contact with Playboy Enterprises. He further stated, "And when they called, they didn't really make an offer." He also emphasized that the sale would not mean an increased emphasis on sex in Innercalm. Sharks, those much maligned denizens of the watery world, will have an opportunity to change their image next month if scientists at the medical center have their way. The researchers are currently seeking paid volunteers to participate in studies of the relationship between stress and oxygen toxicity among commercial and sport divers. Specifically-selected sharks, imported from Australia's Great Barrier Reef, will be placed into the wet pot in the medical center's hyperbaric chamber with divers who are breathing various combinations of oxygen, helium, hydrogen, cyanide and neon gases. Equipment supplied by the Department of the Navy for the purpose will monitor diver stress and oxygen toxicity levels in the lungs of the volunteers, according to Jacques Custodian, a Duke undergraduate who designed and will lead the experiments. Being Blind Helps The studies will be "blind" in that neither the volunteers nor the researchers will ever know which gases will be combined for breathing purposes. This technique is in keeping with the finest scientific tradition. Custodian said, so that preconceptions will not influence experimental results. "We believe this is the first time a study like this has been conducted anywhere in the world," the 37-year-old sophomore said. "It's quite an honor to be involved in it." Custodian, who is majoring in parapsychology, said he became interested in diving research during a visit to Sea World Aquarium over spring vacation. "When I saw how intelligent the killer whales were, jumping through hoops and snatching mackerals from the hands of their keepers, I just knew there were a lot of possibilities for sharks that hadn't yet been considered," he explained. Putting the Bite on NIH A quick call to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., secured a $950,732.52 grant for the enterprising student, and postcards from Sea World to members of the departments of anesthesiology, ichthyology, medicine, hydrology, surgery, phrenology, zoology and psychiatry elicited the cooperation of many specialists at Duke. Custodian said he also sent one of the colorful postcards to his aunt Hattie in Muncie, Ind., although that had nothing to do with the study. "The sharks have been supplied to (Continued on page 2)
