Labs'Priority: Quality Service
(Continued from page 1)
hospital labs licensed and certified
by the College of American
Pathologists as soon as possible,"
Habig said. “We are already"
approved by the Joint Commission
on the Accreditation of Hospitals
(J.C.A.H.), but not all of our
laboratories are are licensed for
interstate commerce."
The chemist said Congress is
expected to pass a clinical laboratory
improvement act this year that
would prescribe strict inspection and
licensing of every American clinical
laboratory in order to insure a
standard level of quality.
"Dr. Schneider's idea is to go
through the voluntary program
before licensing is required by law,"
Habig said.
Eliminate Inconsistencies
Another objective currently being
pursued is consolidation of all the
various lists of laboratory tests and
charges that have developed over the
years into a single book that will
eliminate some inconsistencies.
. Two other goals Habig cited are
increasing the interaction between
hospital labs and labs operated by
the clinical departments and
decreasing the need for hospital
laboratories to deal individually with
Central Processing, Purchasing,
hospital administration and the
computer.
Habig added that Dr. James
Roberts, a laboratory management
and planning consultant from
California, has been hired to make
recommendations about future
laboratory design, services and
staffing. Roberts also will estimate
laboratory work loads over the next
decade and beyond.
PATRICIA BECKJORD, right, new technical director of the Blood Bank,

"Laboratory Science Serving You"
is the slogan for National Medical
Laboratory Week, April 10-16. The
week is a salute to the 150,000
laboratory professionals whose
scientific findings help provide data
for diagnostic decisions. The
observance is supported by a grant
from Technicon Insfartiments Corp.
and coordinated by the American
Society for Medical Technology.
