Hospital Honors Its 'Magnificent Resource' "No more prized resource is available to any institution than its volunteers," said Dr. Roscoe R. Robinson, chief executive officer of the hospital, at the annual dinner in honor of the Hospital Auxiliary. "The auxiliary has been absolutely magnificent," Robinson said. He read a letter from the parents of a patient that included "particular thanks to the nice ladies in pink coats." The first hospital auxiliary in North Carolina, the organization has funded numerous activities that otherwise couldn't be funded, he said, including the gift shop, snack bars, a lending library, guide service and Junior Volunteer program. "Now we need help in a new task, thinking about new programs in planning for the move to the new Duke North Hospital," Robinson said. "As we grow larger, we must try harder to convey the feeling to patients that we really do care about patient welfare." He said the Auxiliary could be particularly helpful in providing a perspective closer to that of the patients than to that of the professionals working here. Ort Busse, auxiliary president, thanked the hospital administration and Dietary Services for the "lovely dinner" and presented gifts to two auxiliary members, past president Edna McCollum and Juanita Johnson, who is retiring after more than 14 years at the Red Zone snack bar.
