Nursing Faculty Member^ Mary Bridge Latham Dies Mary Bridge-Latham, 32, assistant professor in the School of Nursing, and her two-month-old son Joshua were killed in a car accident, Friday, July 8. The funeral was Sunday, July 10. A 1968 graduate of the Duke nursing school, Mrs. Latham received a master's degree in educational media from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a doctoral student in adult and higher education there. Before joining the faculty here in the fall of 1976, she worked at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, the Environmental Protection Agency, Burroughs Wellcome, and the UNC School of Nursing. The coordinator of learning resources and instructional development at the Duke School of Nursing, she wrote and produced a number of instructional materials for use by drug companies, hospitals and schools of nursing. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, national nursing honorary society. She is survived by her husband, William Latham, of Chapel Hill; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Matthew, of Greensboro; and one brother, Richard Matthew, of Chapel Hill. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the School of Nursing Scholarship Fund. TOO SMALL TO BE A ROLLS ROVCf"—That's the way Joseph Burt described this gift at his retirement party, June 23. The gift, an engraved watch, was presented by Dr. Robert H. Wilkins (right), chief of the Division of Neurosurgery, on behalf of the division. Burt, who had been a research assistant in the division since 1%1, also received a Weed-Eater from secretaries and technicians. (Photo by Ina Fried) Scheible Appointed Director Of Dietary Services Dept. David J. Scheible has been appointed director of the Department of Dietary Services. Scheible, 30, succeeds Robert F. O'Connell, who has been promoted to district manager for the Health Care Services Division of the Marriott Corporation, which manages Dietary Services. A native of Green Bay, Wise., Scheible joined the Marriott Corporation as assistant manager at Duke in 1974. Since March 1975 he has been associate director responsible for operational areas including patient service, production, cafeteria and staff dining. He received a B.S. degree in nutritional science in 1972 from the University of Wisconsin -at Green Bay and did graduate work in food and nutrition at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point. He was an administrative dietitian for the Wisconsin Department of Veterans' Affairs before coming to Duke. Other Departmental Changes New responsibilities for four other staff members were announced. Nancy Curtis, administrative dietitian and associate director, will manage department personnel and financial matters. Colleen Martin, clinical dietitian, has been promoted to associate director of employee development and patient education. She will be responsible for inservice education and special patient education programs such as those on diabetes and renal disease. Sharon Pitz, chief clinical dietitian and associate director, will be responsible for patient food service as well as the department's clinical dietetics program. Susan Whittaker, manager of patient food services, has been promoted to associate director with responsibility for coordinating and plannirig for the new food facilities in Duke North and for renovation in Duke South. Since the Beginning O'Connell has been at Duke since July 1973, the beginning of the Duke-Marriott affiliation. In his new position, he will continue to serve as liaison between the medical center and the Marriott Corporation and will be involved in planning for Duke North. Calling the medical center "a kind of special place to be," O'Connell said, "It's a place with talented people and great purposes, a place where an awful lot is happening. The people who manage the hospital are really good to have as associates, and the dietary services employees are the finest people I've had the pleasure of working with. I'm going to miss them all." Store To Move The Medical Center Store at the entrance to the Davison Building will be closed July 18-22, manager Jerry Johnson has announced. The store will reopen Monday, July 25, on the ground floor of the Seeley G. Mudd Building. It will continue to stock medical books and supplies.
