Monogamy provides protection No one can be certain of avoiding cytomegalovirus, genital herpes simplex and other sexually transmissible virus infections, he pointed out, but one of the best protections, other than celibacy, is to maintain a monogamous relationship. Condoms, which have declined in use since the pill was developed, also can help' to prevent exposure; Drugs to combat herpes viruses are on the horizon, Lang said, but it may be many years before they are actually available for treatment. I f A DISPLAY ON THE MEDICAL CENTER, with emphasis on Duite Hospital North, attracted considerable interest last week during the three-day "Done in Durham" exposition at Northgate Shopping Center under the sponsorship of the Chamber of Commerce. The display contained artist's renderings, of the new hospital and some of its features, a photograph of the present hospital and some photographs of Duke's early years. The display is now in the main lobby of the hospital where it will be on exhibit for some time. Professional news A number of members of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery attended professional meetings in Dallas last month. The American Society for the Surgery of the Hand met Feb. 21-23. Dr. J. Leonard Goldner, professor and division chief, moderated a panel on "Nerve Entrapment Problems of the Upper Extremity," and served on, the nominating committee. Dr. James Urbaniak, professor, presented a paper entitled "Digital Sensibility Following Replantation." At the Feb. 22 meeting of the Hip Society, Dr. Donald E. McCollum, professor, presented a paper on "Acetabular Protrusio," which was co-authofed by Dr. James A. Nunley of the house staff. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons met Feb. 23-28. Goldner participated in a symposium on "Peripheral Nerve Repair." He and Dr. William Goodman, resident, presented "The Long Term Results of Soft Tissue Elbow Releases for Improved Elbow and forearm Function in Patients with Cerebral Palsy." Or. William R. Stewart, resident, presented a paper on "Skeletal Metastasesof Melanoma," co-authored by Dr. John M. Harrelson, assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery, and Dr. Hilliard F. Seigler, professor of general and thoracic surgery. House staff officer Dr. Andrew Roman presented a paper entitled "Arthrodesis of the Thumb Metacarphophalangeal Joint in Cerebral Palsy," written by Koman, Dr. Richard Gelberman, fellow in orthpaedics, and Scott Levin, a Duke student. The faculty for the instructional courses included Goldner, Urbaniak and Dr. Donald S. Bright, assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery. Others from the orthopaedic division who attended the Dallas meetings were Dr. Frank Clippinger, professor, and Dr. Robert Ruderman, assistant professor, and Drs. John Lucey, John Beck, Lee Whitehurst and, Jonathan Kurtis of the house staff.
