Now approaching its 25th anniversary Ouly 21), the hospital admitted its half-millionth patient last November. * * * Duke's 1955 post-graduate course for doctors from throughout the Southeast will beheld June 20-23, Dr. William M. Nicholson, director of post-graduate education, has announced. Designed primarily to bring the general practitioner up to date in the newest advances in medicine, this years will include six lectures relating to pulmonary disease and surgery. * * * Dr. Leonard Goldner sailed on the Queen Elizabeth with four other orthopaedists for the U.S. and Canada, on April 20. He was chosen by the American Orthopaedic Association to attend an orthopaedic tour of England as a guest of the British Association and will return June 15. * * * Nina Waite of the Insurance Office recently was elected president of the Durham Chapter of the North Carolina Secretaries Association. * * * Dr. and Mrs. Markee, Dr. Erik Bell, Dr. Talmage Peele, Dr. William Knisely, Sam Agnello, Bob Beach, Wayne Williams and Lee Barrett attended the Medical Society Meeting in Pinehurst. * * * The [medical school] graduating class numbers 29 married students and the month of June will find others being added to the list. The Duke Children's Classic, which began in 1974 to raise money to fight children's diseases, is no longer restricted to Memorial Day weekend, when stars such as Perry Como and David Hartman come to town to play golf. The most recent was The Lakes Summer End Jam, a weekend of athletic and social activities for some 4,500 young adults in Raleigh. Sponsored by Decade cigarettes and Stroh's beer in conjunction with The Lakes Apartments, the weekend produced $3,700 for the Department of Pediatrics at Duke. Included in this amount was a $1,000 direct contribution from Stroh's and John Bauchman, owner of United Beverage Distributors of Raleigh, the product's local distributor. Other individuals involved in coordinating the event were Don Fishand Chuck Knudtson, district manager and sales merchandising manager, respectively, Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co.; and Jerry Ellisburg and Mae Kitchen, director and resident manager, respectively, The Lakes Apartments. "This is the fifth year they've held The Lakes Summer End Jam, but the first year the proceeds have gone to charity," according to Jerry Neville, executive director of the Children's Classic. "We fe6l fortunate that they chose us for their first charitable contribution." Si. A CLASSIC EVENT — Dr. Samuel L. The money was raised through an annual activity weekend at the Raleigh apartment complex. This year, the sponsors chose to share in the purpose of the Children's Classic by contributing proceeds to the battle against children's diseases. The presentation took place recently during a luncheon at the Liggett Group headquarters in Durham.
