Ws All Around You-
Mr. Martin To Attend
Physics Conference
Mr. Marlon Martin, chemis
try and physical science in
structor, will represent the
Science Department of South
eastern Community College at a
Christmas Conference on Phys
ics. The conference will be held
on the campus of the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
December 26-28. There will be
three days of lectures and semi
nars by physicists from all over
the United States. Mr. Martin
said the conference will be at
tended by approximately ninety
high school and college teachers.
Unnoticed
we all know about welding.
Welding Is something you take
when you're flunking college
parallel. College parallel is
where it’s at—money, freedom,
opportunity, etc. well--every
year students go the welding
route ("for just one quarter”)
and never come back to good
old college parallel.
Why? Well it seems that to
day welding plays the most
important part of any one de
vice in the expansion of industry.
Like opportunity and electricity,
it’s all around you—unnoticed.
From your morning shower and
breakfast even, to riding home
from school, and to light-out,
you depend on welding.
)It affords the only means of
attaining sufficient strength of
joining for all manner of space
craft; when the first space plat
form is assembled, welders will
do the assembling. Faced with
a population predicted to double
in this century, researchers are
now making plans to tap the re
sources of that here-to-fore un
tapped 70% ofthe planet’s surface
which Is Its oceans. How will we
make the machines to withstand
ocean floor pressures? welders.
‘A welder In 20 years will be
one of the most important men on
our planet,” asserts Edward H.

Pate, head'of the Welding Depart
ment at SCC. Mr. Pate, who by
general consensus is doing a fine
job of teaching here, is under
going his first year at Southeast
ern, having handed down his
previous position at Wilson Tech
to a former welding student with a
bachelor’s degree in science.
Mr. Pate expresses nothing but
favor for his rfudents: “A man is
lucky to get a class such as I’ve
got; lucky to get boys of such
high calibre. I have hi^ hopes
for these students.”
The best part Is that the stu
dents can hold hl^ hopes for
themselves. Topnotch welders
receive beginning salaries as
hi^ as $4.50 per hour. And they
are very much in demand. The
Student Personnel Office has a
complete folder of letters from
industries who are looking for
graduates from the school of
technology.
Not only can welders, after
one year of schooling, assured of
a lifetime occupation; they can
practically choose any part of
the world in which to work—so
widespread is the demand.
Opportunity — Again, accord
ing to Mr. Pate, "The welder
and the welding machine make
the greatest fabricating team on
earth.”
