We cannot say the same thing for the athletic department. Maybe this is a reason for the lack of student support. Students need the experienced leadership of coaches like Joe Nance, We simply don't have enough qualified coaches. Our school has failed to supply the golden touch in making a team. SCC has soccer, baseball and tennis teams, without coaches at the moment. Our past soccer team had an energetic man, Chuck Hybl as coach, who organized the schedule and helped as much as he could in the technique of soccer. Even though he was unskilled himself in the sport, he did as much as he could. Now he is gone! Our tennis team last spring was coached by a biology teacher, Mr. Robinson, who did a great job, but has also left. Have you heard anything about our tennis team and the new coach? Baseball, our national past time, is enjoyed at SCC in the spring. Most of what is done as far as practicing is by the team memembers on their own. But no help is in prospect for a full-time coach to fulfill their dreams of a winning combination. Lack of coaching is unnecessary here with the fine atheletic opportunities available in the area. THE CAGE SCENE Rams clip Southwood A large crowd on hand at the Tabor City gym witnessed the second meeting between the Southeastern Ram's and Southwood Community College. In the early minutes the Rams potent offense was slewed by a tenacious Southwood defense. Southwood, using a sticky zone and controlling the boards held a 24-23 lead with 11:42 left in the half. The Rams behind the long Orange bombing of Hagens and Connally begin to break up the zone in the waning moments of the first half. The nip and tuck battle ended at the half with the score 46-45. The Rams using a slick passing game penetrated the zone enough to keep it close. At 3:12 the Rams were down by eight. Once again Stanley and Hagens, looking like Charlie Scott and Charlie Davis begin to hit the nets with regularity. When the final buzzer sounded the Rams were on top 93-88. SCC had five players in double figures with Stanley and Hagens grabbing 20 points each and M a 1 pass and Dantzler contributing 14 each. Coach Joe Nance said he was impressed once again with his teams gutty show under pressure. He cited the fouling out of David Dutton, highscoring Southwood forward and hometown Whiteville product, as a crucial in the final minutes. He also noted that Charlie Groves high game of 19 points was a big factor. Rams stop Trojans S.C.C. showed great team effort in the contest with the Mount Olive Trojans. The Rams were behind 36-43 at the half. The Rams rallied in the third and fourth quarters to out-score the Trojans. Coach Nance commented that the club' showed more team effort in the Mount Olive game than in any of the preceeding games. The battle ended with a hard fought victory for the Rams as they defeated the Trojans 89-83. see Rams kill Kings SCC sets school scoring record against Kings Business College by winning 126-82.
