New On the Scene
NATHAN COX
Joining the Business
Department of SCC this
summer was Nathan Cox,
Jr., of Clarkton. Cox is a
graduate of Duke University,
and plans to continue his
education at the University of
Chicago.
Cox states that he really
likes the atmosphere of SCC.
He feels the community
college has provided a place
for people to come together,
to think and rap and is one of
the most creative at
mospheres he has ever en
countered.
BARRY NATION
Nation is the newest ad
dition to the English
department. He received his
B.A. in English from the
University of Florida and his
M.A. in English from
Western Carolina University.
Nation and his wife Cherrie
are residents of Chadbourn.
His hobbie include golf,
tennis, handball, and reading
20th Century novels. When
asked about SCC, he com
mented on the good at
mosphere for students and
faculty to get together and
the foosball machines.
EARL HUGHES
Hughes comes to SCC as
the new microbiology in
structor. He received his B.S.
in biology from Campbell
College and his M.S. from
N.C. State.
He and his wife Dianna and
their “almost two year old”
daughter Dana reside in the
Ash Community. Before
coming to SCC he taught
physical education and health
at Waccamaw High School.
His hobbies include fishing
and carpentry. He is im
pressed with the general
enthusiasm of the faculty and
the attitude of the ad
ministrators. He feels the
facilities are good and would
even compare them to
Campbell College.
He noted the helpfulness of
the work - study students and
also the school’s innovative
attitude toward teaching
methods. Also, he mentioned
there were more op
portunities for the faculty to
meet and socialize with each
other.
RICHARD JOHNSON
Richard Johnson, the
newest member of the
mathematics department, is
from Morehead City. He has
previously taught at St.
Andrews Presbyterian
College and also at Lenoir
Community College.
Johnson is a member of the
Mathematics Association of
America and also of the
National Mathematics Honor
Fraternity. He recently
presented a talk at the
summer meeting of the
Mathematics Association in
Eugene, Oregon.
His hobbies include bridge
and tennis.
MRS. JACOBYNA JONES
Jacobyna Jones is one of
the new members of the
faculty staff at SCC. She is
from Henderson, and now
lives on 308 N. Thompson
Street, Whiteville. She holds a
B.A. Degree from Elon
College, and an M.A. Degree
from Appalachian State
University. Mrs. Jones is
teaching shorthand and
business communication.
What she likes most about
SCC is “everything”: The
pretty campus, the faculty
staff, and the students. Her
favorite hobbies are sewing,
bridge, and reading.
Mrs. Jones stated, “I ap
preciate the opportunity of
being here at SCC and I hope
to get to know everyone
before too long.”
GEORGE REID
George Willis Reid was
instructor of the Black
History studies course this
summer at SCC. We feel
Reid’s class was both in
teresting and informative
and gave all that took the
course a broad insight on the
history of the black man.
Reid is a graduate of North
Carolina Central University
at Durham, and plans to
continue his studies this fall
at Howard University.
Among Reid’s favorite
hobbies are basketball,
football, ping pong and
swimming. “One thing I
really love to do is rap,”
stated Reid, “to really
socialize and make friends.”
He sums up his philosophy on
life like this: “to live each
day of life as fully as you can
without hurting other
people.”
Reid presently resides in
Fayetteville with his wife
Nettie and one-year-old
daughter, Keenah.
MISS BRENDA EDGE
Miss Brenda Kay Edge is a
new teacher in our English
department. She received her
B.A. from UNC-W and her
M.A. from Appalachian.
Her hobbies are reading,
sewing, cooking, and
traveling, especially in the
mountains. She likes SCC
because it is small enough to
allow the teachers to take
special interest in students,
and offer them help.
Miss Edge resides in
Reigelwood with her parents.
KATHRYN COLLINS
Kathryn Kay Collins of
Pembroke is a new addition
to our nursing department.
She holds a B.S. degree from
the College of St. Scholastica.
She has held posts in Forsyth
Memorial Hospital, Winston -
Salem; Catawba Memorial
Hospital in Hickory and St.
Mary’s in Duluth, Minnesota.
MAURICE MAXWELL
One of the new teachers to
enli^ten the campus at SCC
this year is Maurice Maxwell.
He has a B.S. from Emory
Henry College. There, he
majored in chenustry ana
minored in physics and
mathematics. Maxwell
graduated from West
Virginia University with a
Ph. D. in organic chemistry.
Maxwell has been in
Whiteville since April. He is a
resident on West Calhoun
Street in Whiteville. Some of
his likes about SCC are the
student body and faculty. He
also likes warm weather,
reading, auto machanics and
golf.
Maxwell teaches chemistry
and physics.
Miss Robinson now lives in
Chadbourn, North Carolina.
She is originally from Boone,
North Carolina. She is a
graduate from Wake Forest
University, Winston - Salem,
North Carolina. She holds a
B.A. Degree in Spanish. She
teaches Spanish 101-201 and
English. Miss Robinson
stated, “What I like most
about SCC are the students.
They are very friendly. I like
the way it is set up to help
students. I like its modern
facilities and atmosphere.”
Her favorite hobbies are now
skiing, tennis, reading, and
art.
