A1 Flowers scored four straight points to put the Rams out by 8 points, but something happened about a minute before half time; the ballgame was tied. It stayed like that until half time; at the end of the first half the score was tied 47 to 47. In the second half the score remained tied until A1 Flowers made one of his long jumpers to break the tie. It was an exciting game the whole way through; everyone was tense. For the Rams A1 Flowers caged 35 points; Danny Major, 17; Robert Geter, 17; Ronnie Jones, 12; Ronnie Taylor, 13; Frank Alston, 2; Henry Jamison, 12; Otis Jones, 2; Johnny Ben- bow; Buddy Mintz, 0. Josh Todd. That gave the Rams a total of 110 points to bring victory to Southeastern coached by Herschel Walsh. For Southwood: V. Or mond, 32: Greg, 24: B. Monroe 13; D. Bullock, 11; A1 Denton, 9; W. Ronnie Gets Jones By FRANK O’BRIEN Ronnie Jones, 6-foot-5 sparkplug of the Southeastern Community College Rams basketball team, has been awarded the Fourth Annual Jiggs Powers Scholarship which goes to a qualified student who par ticipates in Southeastern’s intercollegiate athletic program. Jones is a sophomore at Southeastern and won numerous honors for his outstanding basketball play during the 1970-71 seasor^He is expected to take up this season where he left off last year as the key performer on the Rams’ team. He is a native of New York and was named to the New York City All-Scholastic Team in his senior year in high school. He came South and played partof a season at Laurinburg Institute, before doming to Southeastern. His selection was an nounced this week by Her schel Walsh, basketball coach at Southeastern, and by Jiggs Powers, sports editor of the Whiteville News Reporter. Powers is a veteran sports editor, covering scholastic and collegiate athletics for nei^ly 25 years. Both Powers and Walsh expressed pleasure with the Jones selection, Coach Walsh describes him as capable of playing on many major college teams. Jones averaged 19 points and 16 rebounds per game last year while the Rams were having only a so-so season. He was impressive in the state community college tournament, averaging 23 points and 17 rebounds. He was named Most Valuable Player in the N.C. Com munity College . Athletic Conference last year. He made the All-Conference team and the All-Community College Region 10 team, composed of the two Carolinas, Virginia and West Virginia. His outstanding play, as well as being a good student, has attracted the interest of several larger institutions, including Pembroke State, UNC-Wilmington, Western Kentucky, and Wake Forest. He is the son of Mrs. Alice Morgan of New York City. “I feel that when you have a winning team you enjoy the game much better.
