Friday, October 24, 1913 THE ELON COLLEGE WEEKLY. EFFORT BACKED UP BY DETERMINATION. Effort is a great thing, and determination is e(iually as great; but as whiskey is useless to the walfare of a nation, so is either effort or determination without the other. We may make all the effort possible, but un less we are determined, we can accomplish no thing. If Columbus had not ben determined to reach a shorter route to India, he probably would have given up in despair after his first effort; but, being determined, he never gave up, and proved to all the world that India could be reached by sailing westw'ard. If the thirteen colonies had not been determined to be freed from England’s tyranny they would never have made an effort, and, if they had not made an effort, there would never have been an Uncle Sam. If Abe Lincoln had not backed his effort up by determination, the young Americans of today, with poor oppor tunities, would not have had this great exam ple. So it is with colege students who come in under adverse circumstances. If they make great efforts and then back those efforts up by strong determination, most assuredly they will come out victorious in the end. What our great nation needs today is effort and determination for the right. E. R. Moore. WHY I CAME TO ELON COLLEGE. I had been writing for self help, as I am an orphan boy without inoney. My father died when I was just a baby; mother when I was six years old. Ever since that time I have been looking out for myself. As far as money is concerned, no person has ever helped me in any way. One day whlie reading the Progressive Farmer I saw an advertisement of Elon Col lege and, when I had read this advertisement, I said to myself: Elon is the place for me. Tiin-rftire, i vvroie 10 rresiaent narper and lie replied saying, “We will be glad to have you with us.” This pleased me to such an extent that I sent in my application at once. Finally, the day came when I packed my trunk and boarded the train for Elon College, which place I reached after about twelve hours’ ride. Elon is one of the most beauti ful places in tlie Southern States. I say Elon is the place for young men who want to work their way through school. The members of the Faculty will help you all they can and, if you will do them anything like half right, they w'ill treat you right. “Where there is a w’ill there is a way” is a true saying. If you have the will to get an education, you will surely find a way. Back, up your efforts by determination, and you will come out successful. There is no better place for young men and women of this type than Eloii College. C. E. Lister. WANTED— SUBSCRIBERS, NEW OR RENEWAL. LOOK AT THIS. Christian Sun, .1il.50 the year.
