Miami Hurricane Flattens Cannonade In Orange Bowl

Much Prestige In Defeat
Old man heat, injuries, and lack of reserve
power proved too much for the Fighting Chris
tians of Elon College, when they tangled with the
Hurricanes of Miami University, last Friday
night in the famous Orange Bowl. The Cannon-
: ade put up a gallant fight in the first half and
held the Hurricanes to two hard earned touch
downs; Miami holding a 12-0 lead when the teams
retired for intermission.

The Elon-Catawba football game which is scheduled for next
Friday at Salisbury will more than likely be the deciding factor for
the championship of the North State Conference. However each team
will have one more conference game to play but from all indications
each team will chalk up another win and this being true, the confer
ence title will be the prize for the winner of the game.

United States. Americans have
been branded as fun-loving people
and statistics of gate receipts for
various athletic events certainly
give some reason for such label
ing. The big stadiums seating
50,000 and more or less have not
arisen merely because some in
stitution wished to furnish their
football team a setting for games.
They were built because of a de
mand by the public for the right
to purchase sitting space to watch
these teams perform.
Such a demand is not present
only for one week during a sea
son. Even with the same men per
forming week after week, fans
continue to pour through the
gates of the concrete arenas. j
The basic urge that generates
this drawing power is, for lack of
a better name, hunnan unpredic- j
tableness. And the past two weeks
have certainly illustrated that this
unpredictableness is present. j
On the week-end of October 19
there wasn’t an upset in a car
load of football games. Everything
went off as scheduled. The news
bring his total to one point greater
than the 30 points scored so far
by Yankowski of Elon.

Boastful undefeated teams and

There lies the secret of foot
ball’s ability to lure the common
people to the stands.
If results, always ran true to

of past games and figure out for
himself which* team would win

The Elon College Christians
will try to repeat the feat of our
forefathers, next Friday night,
when they travel to the Indian En
campment, near Salisbury, and
try to tame the Catawba Red
skins. Both teams enter this game
undefeated in Conference compe
tition, and each has suffered a
single defeat in outside games.
Therefore this game should go a
long way in deciding the kingpin
of the Conference, if Elon should
be the winner, they would have
smooth sailing to the Conference
crown, since they have only one
more league game, and that being
the annual tussle with Guilford.
Should Catawba win they still
would have to contend with the
strong Lenoir Rhyne team.
Year in and year out, the Ca
tawba game is always a tough one
for the Christians. In the last
three meetings of these keen rivals
Elon has imerged the winner
twice. But the one time, in ’38,
that Catwaba did win, they knock
ed off Elon’s claim to the undis
puted possession of the crown, and
the Cannonade had to be satisfied
with a share of the crown.
The Hendricksonmen will have
to be alert on pass defense in this
game, because in Holhouser, Ca
tawba has one of the best passers
in collegiate circles. His comple
tion percentage compares favor
ably with any in the country.

GIRLS SPORTS
Girl’s Archery Class
Meets Twice A Week
Twice weekly the Girl’s Athle
tic Association has been meeting
in the archery field for archery.
Each girl has at least twenty-
four arrows per afternoon for a
try at the target. So far the av
erage score for each girl has
been 192 points each twenty-four
arrows.
The girls have taken great in
terest in archery. Although
bows and arrows to some were
fnew, quite a few have improved
to ace amateur shooters. It isc
hoped to average all archery,
basketball, ping-pong, and shuttle-
board points together and give
letters to the ones who have
reached or gone above a certain
point. The minimum score has
not been decided but will be soon
and given to the girls with the
rules and regulations.
A ping-pong tournament fol
lowed by a shuffle-board tourna
ment will be started the second
week of November and will con
tinue until Christmas holidays.
