“There is no rest

how it all leads to this, now that
you've read this far, why not go
all the way and finish the pfpt*r
up by reading the back page loo,
Uust for a change! or at leasi
tiiat's what we've been led to bt-
iievel)
Preparatory to playing the
President's Ball in Wasliington,
D. Benny Goodman received
a list of F. D. R.’s five songs and
they were; “Anchor Aweigh’,
‘‘Love’s Old Sweet Song,” "Boots
and Saddles,” “"Yellow Roses of
'itotas,"" “Home on the Range,’
and "Happy Days Are Here
Again""—Who"d thunk it?
Add Guys Making iViOiiey; Glenn
Miller sifened a new 3 >ear co;
tract with RCA-'Victor and which
will net him a neat $750 a s de
($1500 a record). The new agret-
ment—by far the ‘ fattest" record
contract ever signed— is ino.x
than double the terms of Miller s
old contract—^He waxes for the 'ij
cent BlucBird label.
Artie Shaw, who recently em
barked on a string of Eastern
theatre dates, will draw $10,0u0
per week for |iimself and band
for stage appearances, besides
cont.nuing to play on the Burns
and Allen air show—another guy
that won’t siarve for a while. In-
cidenially it is said that he will
“leorganize again.”
Ibe use of name bands in mo-
t on pictures—a trend whica
about become a habit in Holly
wood last year—seems to be the
1941 vofcue. Among tiiose to .'.p
pt-ar in pics this year are Ozzie
Nelson, his orchestra, and his
wife (Harriet Hilliard) for Coliun-
bia in a pic to star Ruby Kee.er—
Bob Crosby's band has just start
ed work in their second for RKO
—Glenn Miller is due in Holly
wood sometime in March to face
the cameras-—Kay Kyser and his
band axe due “out there” this
month to keep antoher pictuiej
dale with RKO—The Ink Spots ^
are also getting set for their first|
big motion pic, “The i. real Amer-i
ican Broadcast ”, with Alice i'aye
for 20th Century Fox—^(Inciden-j
tally the Spots are the best paid
negro quartet in the worid to
day)—Gkn Gray and the Casa
Loma band, now on the coast, al
so are dickering for a spot in a
forthcoming production.
Benny Goodman is still switch-j
ing the personnel of his new band
—Teddy Wilson has been sitting
in on the Goodman rehearsals and
if “things" can be cleared up and
agreements made, Wilson wiil be-|
come the Goodman pianist. There
is also a change in the rhythm'
section; Dave Tough has replac
ed Harry Jaeger, who was sup
posed to have a 2 year contract. I
NEV/ BANDS TO WATCH: '
Charlie Spivak, one of tho
brighter new bands of 1940—This
band is coming up fast and Char
lie has long been recognized as
one of the better trumpet men.
Sonny Dunham, formerly with|
the Casa Loma Orch—famous for!
his doubling on trumpet and
trombone—and his band of kids.;
In Dunham's band there is nO|
trace of his Casa Loma training—{
he's strictly on a Lunceford kick;
and from what those who've-
heard this young band say this!
Lunceford kick is strictly in the
groove. The star of the band, I
other than Sonny, is Corky Cor-!
coran—16 year old tenor saxj
player. Corky was discovered by
Lunceford and recommended him;
to Lunceford. So if you get a'
chance don’t miss this white
Lunceford. In fact, don’t miss
either of these two upcoming^
bands if you can help it. Also,]
look out for Muggsy Spanier'sj
band—Muggsy recently left Bobj
Crosby to form his own band. His';
last venture was a failure butj
this one promises to fare better.
To keep from being fluffed off|
by having their fem member ofj
their vocal quartet marry, the;
Merry Macs have signed their,
new one. Mary Lou Cook, to a
two year contract which has ai
provi.s;on that if she marries in'
that time she forfeits $10,000 to
the* brothers, Joe, Ted and
Judd McMichael- i
mmmmi
CLAIRE DE LUNE
FOR "jrVERS” REASONS Dorothy
Claire, new singing star on Glenn
Miller’s "Chesterfield Moonlight
Serenade,” is riding the crest of
the popularity waves. Miller’s
grand band broadcasts 3 nights
weekly over C.B.S. network.
