Duke’s campus theater, opened in 1928 by the student Y. M. C. A. and was patterned after the “Y” mo vie theater at North Carolina State College. The theater ex pects to welcome its 1,300,000th patron some time dur:ng this two- day anniversary celebration. This patron will be the first to cut a slice from the large birthday cake on display in the theater lobby. , With Benny Goodman will be; all of his stars, including Helen' Forrest, vocalist, Cootie Williams,! trumpeter, and Charlie Christians,! guitarist, as well as the new Good-j man sextet appearing for the first time in the south. Y., 7:30 , E. S. T., Mondays). The new Goodman commercial is being j tested locally over WJZ before putting it on a coast to coast hook-up. John Hammond, young jazz enthusiast and official of the Columbia Record Corp., is doing all scripts and assisting with the actual production of the show which features Goodman’s music. It’s mighty good news to us to learn that Earl ‘‘Father” Hines has a band again. As yoy know, the “Father” junked his old band back in the fall and temporarily retired from the music business but now word comes from New York that Hines hit Broadway with a new 18 piece band and really tore the place apart. Those who heard the band claim it tc be the “best Hines band,” yet. That statement mean.s the band must really kick.
