Elon College sjxirts suffered
dire loss this past week when it
was revealed that Jack Gardner
and Preston Towns, Coach Hen
drickson’s outstanding basketball
forward and center, respectively,
have dropped out of school.
Gardner, the (’hristian’e co-cap-
tain and leading scorer, has a*-
oepted a iob witli Hanes Hosi(>ry,
while Towais has joinetl the anned
forces of our country.
Jack was notified by the draft
board that he would Ik* rwlassi-
fied if he c/)ntinued in school. He
was given his ii»b b,T *Jugh Hamp
ton, coach of Hanes l4osierv team.
Last year Gardner set a North
State cfinference scoi'ing record,
and has been a star since his fresh
man year. He wa.s a Senior. In
addition to his e.xcelh'nt basketball
record, Gardner was one of Jlen-
drickson’s stars on the baseball
diamond. He hit well over .400
last year.
Towns came to Elon after four
years at Richmond Military Aca
demy, Atigusta, (la. He left a week
ago for Ft. McC'lellan, .\nniston,
Ala. Preston receivwl his commis
sion as a second lieutenant in Jan
uary, 1941.
lyoss of the pair dealt a serious
blow to Elon’s championship
hopes. Eoth boys had practieally
soon full-time action in everv
game. “We will do the best we can
and go on as usual,” was (''oach
Hendrickson’s comment after
learning of the loss of the two I
stars.
CONFERENCE
CHATTER
With only the ('atawba defeat
to their rewd the Elon ('annon-
ade meets these traditional rivals,
here in the local gymnasium to
night.
Bitter and hard will be the
struggle that ensues on the battle
fied that night. Yes, (Jatawba
licked us at the last meeting but
we have a better team than they.
Those liedskins played inspired
ball the night they .slipped by our
Imjvs, and of course they miglu
have reniemlx-red a particular foot
ball score last, fall which was 8-7
and the Indians were on the short
nd of the sc/ire. Too, our t‘ani
had just suffered a severe loss in
the persons of Jack Gardner and
Preston Towns.
-Many gave up hop^8 of Elon's
chance for the conference crown
i^ftt'r the absence of these two stars
Ix-came known, but we beg to opine
different. The ‘Tlorse” has done
an excellent job of molding a good
club out of the hoys that remained
on the squad. It might pay to re-
menilKT too that the crown is won
by the team that captures the most
games in the tournament.
Ajipalachian seems to have taken
a back seat on the conference band
wagon after their defeat by Elon
and High Point.
IVin't count Western Carolina
out of the race either, these Cata
mounts have a team that, has bec-n
improving stea'dily for the past
three years and these boys can be
expec-t“d to offer .stiff opposition
the so called conference favo
rites.

With ED STOREY
rOST MORTEM
When our C hristians breezed ovc'r to Boone la.st Saturday night
to take on those .Vppalachian Mountaineers the fans of that institution
seemed to take ^lity on the poor boys from down at Elon for as they
put it ‘‘Appalachian has the best team in the country and you fel
lows don’t have a ghost of a chance to win tonight” . . . Must have been
pretty hard medicine for the “die harrls” of Appalachian when Elon
upsi't their undefeated, invineiable, team by a 48-45 score . . . Trufj
the Mountaineers had one of the be.st teams in the country, but that
Saturday night th(‘v took on one that was just a mite letter .
STOREY'S STORIES
Currv ■Rrvan w’as voted the outstanding blocker on the ’41 Christ-
i.an football squad in a meeting Thursday . . . Gitchi will go down ira
Elon football history as the lad who blocked that all important punt
to give the Christians an 8-7 margin over (^atawba last November.. .
Preston Towns, regular center on the Elon basketball team departedi
for his home in -\ugusta, Georgia Wednesday when he was informed!
by Dean Messick that he would not be able to play against Catawba
Saturday night. Towns had hoptnl to remain w’ith the Christian squad
until aft^r the Catawba game, but the fact that he could not register
for the second semester made him inelegible for the Salisbury tilt.
‘‘Prestone” will be inducted into the army as a second lieutenant anti
will be stationed at Fort Mc’Lelland, Anniston, Alabama ... All
this talk about Elon dropping athletics can be f.irgiitten as Coack
Hendrickson's foresightedness in purchasing a sur])lus of athletic sup
plies will enable the school to carry on for the duration, or at least
for another year, which we all hope will be the dviration.
Folderol or Everyona Has a Ric/ht To llis Own Opinion
Lo(ik for Molly Craft to carry the Elon baseball team a lonf^
way this year . . . Ab'ernathv may be missed, but who do«,*sii’t miss
big fellows . . . Tomanchek, Hobson, Clayton and the others may
bring Elon another baseball title . . . the-Boston lied Sox should have
their best year in the majors. I’m hxtking for a p>nnant for C!ronii»
and company . . . Note to freshmen footballers wlio failed to make a
lettCT this year . . . You should worry, think of all the troubles a pub
licity man has . . . For one dollar per story I’ll make up a nice tale
that should take care of the reason you didn't make a letter I you ear»
send it to that k'auty back home . . . These guys who can’t see a thinpc
out of their left ear will probably make the best soldiers . . . On the
morning the dining hall was destroyed “Chink” Spivey hurriedly-
told one of the sweating firemen not to put out the fire until he got
back with his wieners and marshmallows . . . Look out for these de
fense jobs, boys; they're here todav and gone with the Armistice . . .
If vou’ve read this far it’s vour own hard luck . . . Keep ’em playing.
